Recent Russian naval activity in Europe exceeds levels seen during the Cold War, a top U.S. and NATO military officer said, voicing concern that the distributed nature of the deployments could end up "splitting and distracting" the transatlantic alliance.

quote:

"We're seeing activity that we didn't even see when it was the Soviet Union. It's precedential activity," Howard told Reuters in an interview late on Saturday during a missile defense conference.

quote:

"They’re a global navy, I understand that. But the activity in this theater has substantially moved up in the last couple of years," Howard said

quote:

"When ... you think about what happens when they move forces around, you look at the alliance and they end up splitting and distracting the view of the alliance," she said.

I haven't kept up with the size or capabilities of the Russian Navy but this probably literally impossible.

Good...

Maybe tougher economic sanctions and America supplying the Ukraine with weapons is what Purim wants to see. Or maybe we place our missile defense shield back in Poland like we were suppose to do until Obama got outmaneuvered by Putin.

the Russian navy is currently undergoing rapid modernization and that should be of some concern to Pentagon planners, a U.S. intelligence report is warning. As reported by the Washington Free Beacon, the report from the Office of Naval Intelligence [PDF] warns that Russian naval forces are quickly being modernized with new advanced submarines and lethal ballistic and cruise missiles, in particular.

Click the link and you will see the report

quote:

Included in the buildup are three new classes of submarines and a number of new warship types, the report notes, while warning that the vessels will “provide a flexible platform for Russia to demonstrate offensive capability, threaten neighbors, project power regionally, and advance President Putin’s stated goal of returning Russia to clear great power status.”

quote:

he Russian military in general is getting substantial funding increases for new systems, and that includes the navy, with his goal of restoring the military to Soviet-era power by 2020

Couple that with the new Naval base in Syria...

Cool. Let them do whatever they want. If they want to fight war, then let Europe deal with it. Or they can have Europe and tell them we'd be happy to trade with them as hemisphere leaders.

Tell them of they come within a few hundred miles of the USA we will remind them of who they are fricking with.

Russian ships routinely conduct spy missions near U.S. waters. The Viktor Leonov has traveled up the Atlantic Coast before, in 2014 and 2015. It was also docked in Havana in 2015 when the first high-level U.S. delegation made its historic trip to Cuba.

In fact, the hill reported it was 50 miles of the coast.

What technology has the U.S. Come up with since the Cold War? I always laugh when idiots act like the U.S. Force isn't outdated. Russia has newer tanks, newer subs, and newer fighters. Outside of aircraft carriers and B2 bombers... what new technology does the U.S. Have that Russia doesn't?

You think their attack subs are as good as the Virginia class?

Sorry, but this is kinda funny.

The Russian navy would last about 30 minutes against the US Navy.

During the mid 60s to 70s their naval building exploded and they could match us everywhere except carrier groups...which was fine for them because they weren't trying to project power so they didn't need carriers.

Now the Russian navy is pathetically small. 26 surface ships and about 40 subs.

Our ships are superior in everyway. Our technology on those ships is far superior. And our sailors are far better trained.

30 minutes might be too much time. The Russian navy would die quickly in a war with the US Navy.

50 miles off our coast is international waters. Nothing we can do about it.

This.

I understand they have invested a great deal into new naval capabilities etc, but the fact remains that their ships etc are overall - extremely antiquated.

Russia has enough of a navy to cruise the Black Sea and the Mediterranean and that's about it. They have one aircraft carrier, a few surface ships, and nearly two dozen submarines. The Russian navy is a defense force and cannot project significant power world wide to be much of a threat to us.
