RS: Inside The Military's Culture of Sexual Abuse

quote:

"Sexual assaults make up the fabric of daily American military life," says former Marine Capt. Anu Bhagwati, executive director of the advocacy group Service Women's Action Network. Research suggests that one out of every three women in the U.S. military is the victim of sexual assault, making military women twice as likely to be raped as civilians. (Victims are disproportionately female, given that women make up less than 15 percent of the military, but men are victimized, too: More than 40 percent of vets receiving treatment for Military Sexual Trauma are men.) An anonymous DOD survey found that in 2010, an astonishing 19,000 service members were sexually assaulted; a mere 13.5 percent of those attacks were reported to authorities. Victims have little incentive to report, since the military's insular justice system rarely holds perpetrators accountable. Of the sliver of sexual assaults reported last year, 92 percent never saw the inside of a courtroom but rather were dismissed or administered wrist-slap penalties like fines, reduced PX privileges or counseling – a prosecution record even outgoing Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta has called "an outrage."

I thought sexual abuse cover-ups only happened in the Catholic Church.

Make sex with local nationals and whores illegal, put a bunch of women into the units, isolate them and then act surprised by sexual complaints.

And now place them on the front lines in stressful situations...

re: RS: Inside The Military's Culture of Sexual Abuse
While no woman can EVER asks or prompts a sexual assault, the vast majority of woman I encountered in the military were using their sexuality to gain favor.

I would not at all be shocked to know if the reason why some of these complaints went unreported and unprosecuted beyond administrative punishment at the company or battalion level is because of a mixture of wanted and unwanted sexual advances.

I saw a guy get a citation for calling a fellow female soldier "a bitch." The citation wasn't for improper language or something real, it was for sexual harassment.

The femasle soldiers were competing with the local whores when I was in Korea. There wasn't a week go by that some female was sent home for prostitution. Not being able to get a pass was no barrier to an enlisted man having sex.
