Security experts say it's common for lawyers for private organizations to turn down requests from law enforcement for access to servers. Comey has publicly bemoaned that fact, wishing aloud that companies would trust the FBI more.

A source with experience in both FBI cyber investigations and private sector forensics said over the past five years or so, it's become common to let well-established companies handle forensics -- even after the FBI comes in.

Forensic procedure involves documentation, allowing the FBI to focus on other aspects of the work. In issues with sensitive information, such as those involving email breaches of high-profile victims, the FBI occasionally prefers not to ever have data that could be mishandled.

Are you really surprised organizations don't give the FBI access to its entire server history?

I'm surprised by the rush to blame the Russians.

I didn't think there was a choice. You mean if the FBI wants my computer for evidence of a major crime, I don't have to give it to them and I can just "tell" them whats in there??? Kool! Thanks for the info!

Without checking the servers themselves, are they just signing off on the DNC speculation?

I can see why the DNC wouldn't, after all the corruption that was exposed. There's no telling what some agent would find.

And they lied by saying the FBI never asked for the servers, as reported in the article.

Are you surprised the government is investigating the hacking of private organizations and individual, affiliated with the left after an election they lose, but never lifted a finger when Sony, Chase, Yahoo, various government agencies, etc were hacked over the past 8 years?

So your premise is that cyber agencies never investigated those incidents?

What "cyber" agencies do you believe have jurisdiction?

I wouldn't hand it over either. Certainly not with Trump taking over in a few days.

The certainly didn't warrant diplomatic retaliations and public hearings. What's the difference now? Oh yeah, democrats lost the election.

Okay. And the question remains the same. Who do you believe has jurisdiction over this time of crime or illicit activity?

“The FBI repeatedly stressed to DNC officials the necessity of obtaining direct access to servers and data, only to be rebuffed until well after the initial compromise had been mitigated,” the official said.

So they held out?

quote:

"In nine out of 10 cases, we don't need access, we don't ask for access, we don't get access. That's the normal [procedure],” Leo Taddeo, a former special agent in charge of the cyber division of the FBI’s New York office, told The Hill. “It's extraordinarily rare for the FBI to get access to the victim's infrastructure because we could mess it up," he added. "We usually ask for the logs and images, and 99 out of a hundred times, that's sufficient.”

Seems there's more to the story. Any other military guys with access to the report who might weigh in here?

Anyone?

Looks like the FBI reviewed the RNC systems when it was suspected they had been hacked: https://www.politico.com/story/2016/12/priebus-denies-report-rnc-was-hacked-232483

quote:

"We contacted the FBI months ago when the DNC issue came about," Priebus said on ABC's "This Week." "They’ve reviewed all of our systems. We have hacking detection systems in place. And the conclusion was then, as it was again two days ago, when we went back to the FBI to ask them about this, that the RNC was not hacked."

If only there were a government agency that collects data from major internet cables between countries that could provide the data to the FBI.

Of government agencies being hacked? I am no expert (medical software guy), but i would think at a glance:
1.) cyber branches of agencies being hacked
2.) FBI
3.) NSA
4.) CIA if foreign government sponsored.

Does that seem absurd? We got any cyber bubbas online?
