Have you seen any convincing argument for the 1. legitimacy of IP or 2. that it will be sustained?

No and no.

IP is incompatible with the information revolution.

hot damn you are a moron

wikipedia freely allows you to copy it.
I said nothing of simply "copying" Wikipedia. I raised the issue of rebranding it, while taking credit for the work of its creators.
Try it.

See how that works out for you.

Clear?

Did you see Molyneux and Jeffrey Tucker talk about IP on Adam vs the Man the other night?

And welcome to the past, josh. Theft just might well be the second oldest profession.
Criminal penalty and incarceration is probably the third.

Keep your theft petty, You might stay lucky.
Become a larger player, you'll be SOL, as you should be.
Past, Present, or Future.
Matters not.

So if information use isn't stealing, can you actually charge someone for using your bit coin codes?

how do you differentiate information and original conception. I can't claim reporting the weather is original thought, but if I create a new algorithm for forecasting, and decide to market the algorithm, I should have the right to take action against you if you steal it and market it as your own. IP laws should be only in place as an alternative to keep me from shooting you without retribution (which I'm ok with btw). I don't see this any different from you stealing the corn I grew and selling it as your own.

You can charge someone for anything, that doesn't mean they'll have to pay.

You can't steal the algorithm. If you share the knowledge with me, and I use the algorithm, you still have your original algorithm. There was no theft.

bluster from anyone won't convince many of very much, on this subject

what would tip me to very seriously reconsider my general stance would be a number of actual breakthroughs in instances where IP was given up or not applicable

until then i remain quite convinced that actors will respond to incentives. the most meaningful advancements will happen where the best innovators are enticed by the profit motive, most of the time.

people building wiki-stuff for fun/charity in their free time can be nice exceptions, but won't cure cancer or get people on mars

Both of those gentlemen have given up their "IP" rights. Which include massive... MASSIVE works.
