We are undoubtedly the most candy arse generation in human history compared to those people. We are completely clueless to what it means to being genuinely concerned over the fate of western civilization and America as we know it, all being held in the balance. We are oblivious to having to sacrifice and do without, or read the names of people we know and grew up with who gave it all pour into our newspapers.

I'd really like to think we would stand strong, but recent history tells me that many, probably half of our civilian population at least would cave, crawl into a fetal position and beg for mercy, especially if they were drafted into such an uncertain and daunting task of taking on two military super powers at the same time in Germany and Japan, one of which sliced through the powers of Europe like hot butter, and the other of which hadn't been defeated militarily in what seamed like forever.

Without question in my mind it took a truly great generation to win such a Great War against such great odds.

This is just not true. This country went full patriot after 911. I have no doubt that the people in this day and age could do the same. Trust me that generation, just like everyone, had cowards, you just aren't going to hear stories about them. I respect the hell out of them, but to put them on some pedestal that the current generation couldn't achieve is ridiculous.

Oh yes, you're right. The sacrifice of hanging flags outside of businesses was great.

THe fact we could say we were proud to be Americans was quite an accomplishment.

The moment you told people they couldn't have a McDonalds hamburger, Chicken Nuggets, or Starbucks Vanilla Latte because of rationing for the war effort, they would go ape shite, and burn the cities to the ground.

People signed up for the Military in droves.

WTF did you want them to do? Hitler and Nazi Germany was a very real and tangible thing to fight against. They were a nation. They had uniforms and a clear figure head. It was the easiest rallying of people for a war in all of history. It was so clear whonthe right side was.

WWI was much murkier, which is why we didn't get involved till the very end.

Re-watching Ken Burns' "The War"

I have yet to watch it. I started "The West" earlier this week, but it is not keeping me glued to the TV. I hope "The War" is better.

Of course they did. It's not everybody. We still have people who give a shite, but the numbers are shrinking, and even then did not represent the sentiment of Americans, just the red blooded Americans who will always be there.

How old are you?? The entire country rallied around 9-11. I guarantee we wouldn't just let the Nazi's take over.

Old enough to witness how big of a bunch of pussies we've become.

The military would be there, and a whole lot of us would as well, but the fact remains that this country is overflowing with candy asses who shreak at the very idea of taking a stand on much of anything, especially one that might very well cost them their life, and do without? WTF? Do without? They've never done without in their entire life. You expect them to do without? That might interfere with blaming their parents and other past generations for their own failures in life.

They take stands on everything and don't confuse the loudest for the majority.

Meh, we're no different than any other generation. We have our candy asses, our heroes, and people in the middle. It's just the current generation has never had to struggle or do without so they would suffer some initial shock. The WWII generation grew up in the Depression so they were already used to roughing it.

I will say that I don't think a draft would go over too well today unless there was an all out invasion of America Red Dawn style. People are sick of constant wars and I think a good many young men would ignore the draft orders unless there was a very imminent situation. But I think once the shite hit the fan that people in this generation are just as capable as any other as far as fighting and surviving. It would be a shock at first (since we've had it so easy for so long) but when people face certain death, they tend to get their asses in gear.

We're plain spoiled rotten, and while that's not entirely all our fault, our expectations are absurd much of the time, so much so that it affects everything in our society. We've never known a hard time really in our lives, and so if something on that level of difficult came we are really pretty unprepared. That's just the way it is.

I hope you aren't implying that it went well previously. All manner of flag-burning and violent protests occurred because of the draft for The War in Vietnam. Guys were fleeing the country. I remember. I was there.

I know. My dad was a Vietnam draftee and saw combat in the infantry. I remember him bitching about draft dodgers.

But I think it would be worse today. I think more would resist, more would flee, more would "conscientiously object" than did in Vietnam. It would be hard for the Cops to go after all the draft dodgers -- there would be too many.

However, it might not make as much of a difference since warfare today is relying less and less on men marching on the battlefield and more on technology. We wouldn't need to deploy 500,000 ground troops today I don't think. I think warfare today is much safer than it was even in Vietnam. If this was 1965 and we went into Afghanistan for a 10 year war, we would have lost much more than a few thousand. Although, to be fair, agent orange and napalm probably would have killed a lot more of the enemy then we kill today as well.

How long did that last before the left went off the reservation?

A month? A year?

Jesus Christ. You do realize this "Great Generation" had to be dragged in to the war kicking and screaming. In fact they were tricked by Roosevelt into entering the war. Prior to our being attacked, we mainly supplied goods and food.

Hurray for them, they went to war after being attacked militarily. What do you think we would do today? something different?

Another bullshite post by someone pining for "the way it was".
