I think that may be a different leak...it involves the leak to Der Spiegel, not the Guardian/Observer story that was pulled

Just got confirmation on a second year. Reward looks to be further schooling, a couple of good positions in DC, SHAPE in Belgium, or back to Stuttgart...but EUCOM instead of AFRICOM this time.

So, you WANT people who break laws you disapprove of to face punishment? You have no desire to see them "get away with it"?

The Der Spiegel leak involved bugging EU offices while the Guardian/Observer leak involved voluntary info sharing agreements between nations. Two leaks from two different sources. The Guardian/Observer is obviously having a little trouble with its story right now.

Yes I want them to face punishment. There are a lot of laws I don't agree with, but until they are overturned they are still the laws and should be obeyed. If everyone just disregarded the laws they don’t agree with it would be anarchy and chaos and I am not an anarchist.
Plus Snowden was not simply a conscientious objector who found himself with information of government wrong doing; he sought it out and then leaked it.

We will have to agree to disagree.
There have been many lawbreakers that I wanted to escape punishment.

Those that did not sit at the back of the bus, those that helped the underground railroad and those that dumped the tea in the harbor. All of these are people that I wanted to see avoid punishment, but I understand your position- they did break the law.

You make a good point, but it was not simply their actions that changed the world view but rather the outrage that came from their arrest and or punishment. The laws they broke were wrong and unconstitutional and the unrest caused by their actions resulted in a revolution, a civil war, and a civil rights movement which righted those wrongs. Perhaps the outrage of Snowden’s punishment will cause great change.
But right now Snowden’s actions are more of a sucker punch the US. He snuck up behind us, hit us, then ran to our enemies to tell our secrets and look for protection. The people you mentioned stood up for the wrongs they perceived and faced the system that was in place and fought to see it changed. This is not what he has done and should not be compared to any of the people you mentioned.

Us?

He did not sucker punch us. He may have turned the lights on the government who was sneaking in our homes under the cover of darkness, but I think that is a good thing.

Our secrets? That we spy on Americans? What did he do to harm, not shame, America? I do not feel less safe, from foreign nations than I did before, do you?

Us...was relative to America the nation not the citizens.

We do not know and never will know what information he gave to China and now Russia. He took papers and thumb drives with him. His protection and asylum have not come free i can promise you. Let’s not pretend the two nations he chose to flee to are just welcoming him in because they believe he is doing the "moral" thing.

His actions in obtaining the information and the locations he chose to seek asylum to me speaks volumes about his intentions. While I appreciate and respect his whistle blowing on the NSA, I truly believe he has intentions or has done more traitors acts. He is not a hero in my mind. Had he stood here and faced the system he would be a hero.

I didn't have a problem with Snowden being a whistle blower; what I did have a problem with was him going to China and Russia with everything.

I actually have more of a problem with the latest "whistle blower". There have been spies infiltrate this country for generations funneling information back to their home country. We do have to keep an "eye" on them as well.

I like the fact that Snowden blew the whistle allowing the country to see that the govt has been spying on us. It just makes me uneasy that he went to communist countries with the info.

We see things differently. I hope he inspires more patriots to stand up against our domestic enemies in the government.

He may had shared some things, but are you now concerned about a Russian or Chinese attack?

I am more concerned about attacks originating out of this nations capitol than another.

I am out.

While disagree with you,I do appreciate your service.

I am always concerned about Russia and China. They are two of the world’s largest and military forces. I'm also concerned about North Korea and Iran. I don't mind spying on the French either. Those frickers stab us in the back every chance they get! So yes him giving anything to them is a concern.

I also think that anyone who didn't know or at least think our government was spying on us before this came out has had their heads in the sand!

I honestly decided not to comment on the actual subject of this thread because I'm a little tired of walking a fine line to make clear an obvious point concerning Snowden's character and the nature of his actions. But I have to say that if you're having this much trouble keeping track of the plot, you should drop the subject altogether. I said days ago that as this situation unfolded it would become obvious to everyone that Snowden is anything but a hero. These latest alleged revelations should have put a nail in the whole "hero" narrative. But you fricked it up-- either intentionally or otherwise.

The alleged revelations that have the Europeans up in arms (published in Der Spiegel) were provided by Snowden--not some second so-called whistleblower and the now redacted story published in the Guardian. Julian Assange's latest statements should give further clarification.

Please correct your title.
