He is the longest living after leaving office, Hoover was the previous record holder at just short of 31 years. I guess crappy one term Presidents at least get to live a long time afterwards.

Hoover lived for 31 years after leaving office. Ford lived for 29 years. A few have lived for 15-25 years. Most die within a few years of leaving office.

That seems to not be a recent trend (last one to die within 5 years was LBJ in '73).

Since then:

Nixon: 20 years
Ford: 29 years
Carter: 36 years (and counting)
Reagan: 15 years
Bush I: 24 years (and counting)
Clinton: 16 years (and counting)
Bush II: 8 years (and counting)

John Adams lived 25 years after he left the Presidency in 1801.
