Do we mean news as in coverage and sensationalism? If so, then you're probably right on.
If we mean "biggest events"
1) 9/11
t2) Boxing Day Tsunami
t2) Japan earthquake and tsunami
Katrina is in the conversation for both categories. Coverage was insane and abused by anyone with any cause to sell

- 9/11
- Barack Obama winning Presidential Election
- Donald Trump winning Presidential Election.
I wanted to say killing of Osama Bin Laden but I remember coverage trailing off pretty soon afterwards.

1. 9/11
2. Persian Gulf War - probably the advent of 24 hour news coverage.
Gets muddy after those 2. The Reagan assassination attempt would get MASSIVE coverage in today's news world, but I don't remember it being talked about a whole lot. I mean it was, and it was a HUGE news story, but it wasn't on the TV everytime you turned it on. Same with the Marine barracks bombing in the Beirut in their early 80's.
The Obama and Trump elections both had massive coverage as well.

same here. Born 1982 so, maybe the fall of the Soviet Union, but I was too young to pay any attention to that.

Amount of coverage
I may even put OJ at #1 because he was the #1 news and entertainment item for 2 years. It's hard to say because so much time has passed since the 1&2 on my list
