"Rachel Jeantel’s lack of literacy is a societal problem"

Black Journalist weighs in

quote:

If we take nothing else away from Rachel Jeantel’s testimony, it should be this: Literacy involves more than being able to read and write. It involves the ability to effectively operate in the overall society when it matters most. Unfortunately, Rachel failed this test. We will see how it affects the outcome of this trial, and whether it helps or hurts the prosecution’s case.

quote:

Ebony, a history-making Black publication, could have penned a thought-provoking piece about how far we have fallen from this cultural norm, how we must return to it, and how we can begin again. Instead, the editorial writer went into attack mode: “The chastising of this woman’s speech and body language belied the fact that many themselves were rejecting their own self-reflection. For far too many of our community members that epitomize Drake’s ‘started from the bottom’ mantra would like to forget the places from whence they came.”

quote:

It would be wonderful if this sparked a wider conversation on the failure of modern Blacks to instill a love of words, literacy, and knowledge in our young, and greater still, the failure to encourage and teach our children how to maneuver outside of their everyday reality.

Asking black Americans to ELEVATE is considered a HATE CRIME within American Liberalism. Only low expectations and normalizing failure is acceptable. Bad author !

i'm glad SOMEbody in the media called out that horrible piece in Ebony

*ETA:

quote:

As a Black woman I have been ridiculed for “talking white” and “thinking I’m white” because I navigate quite well outside of Black culture. Frankly, I would rather take that type of flack than be an embarrassment across worldwide media because of my inability to do so.

oh shit

She has the same public education that most of us have. Somehow, by some miracle, we can read, write and speak English but she can't.

Christina Coleman, writer at the Global Grind, takes the “you’re not black enough to understand Rachel” tack:

snip

This excuse is not only lousy, but lazy. Some critics of Rachel Jeantel may have come from the bottom, some may come from a middle class background, while others may even be upper class. But here is what we all have in common: Parents (single and otherwise) who made sure that no matter how down and fly we were at home, we knew how to interact, engage, and compete outside of the home. This is a necessary component in finding success for any person of any background or race. Knowing this was one way to ensure you did not stay at the bottom, and you were not limited in your opportunities.

This woman gets it.

Is this any different than putting a mulleted redneck on the stand as the star witness? But, if that's all ya got.....

Great article, but the author will no doubt be relegated to 'cornball sister' status. The comments are well worth reading, too.

Given the subject matter, seeing a word spelled phonetically as if the author had never read it, only heard it, is humorous to me.

She has the same public education that most of us have.

Not yet.

She is 19 years old and was a Sophomore. (She is described as a Junior - but school hasn't started yet, so I interpret that to mean she just passed her sophomore year)

Yes, but she speaks 3 languages! How many of you whitey crackers speak 3 languages?!

In all seriousness, I was hoping that West was going to ask her to say something in Spanish and in Creole to demonstrate her multi-linguistic abilities. But I guess that would have been seen as picking on the poor 19-yr-old high school junior who can't read cursive.

no it's not. it's a cultural norm within the community from which she hails. it's the product of 70% single parent homes promoted by the welfare plantation.

True, true. The difference being, the mulleted redneck would be expected to be responsible for his situation in life. The "stupid cracka" should get an education. Why is that "greasy redneck" 19 years old and just finishing the 10th grade? With Rachel, it's a "societal problem".

This....that articles author hit it right on the head

she laid bare the apathy, the laziness, the lack of education, the racism of her 'culture' on public television for millions to see and later discuss.

Its actually a good thing.
