Serious question for those who support a move to single payer/government run universal healthcare.

If the US moved to this model, how would you propose to handle the massive increase in unemployment and other economic issues caused by the immediate irrelevance or drastic cutbacks to the businesses of major corporations (United Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, etc.)?

I don't support single payer/UHC, but it would require a massive increase in government employees to oversee the program. I imagine many people that worked for insurance firms would move into the governemntal workforce instead.

This is another reason the left wants single payer. More people on the government dime equals more votes for the Dems.

United healthcare and kaiser permanente are providers, not insurance companies. Why are they going to cut back? If anything, they would be hiring.

Kaiser Permante offers insurance.

Ok but its still a poor example. They are heavily leveraged against this kind of hypothetical situation.

It really can't work for one major reason here.

The amount of fat/obese people in America.

It works in European nations because people are much more healthy and don't drive everywhere for starters.

Also a good indicator why people in northern and western American cities are much more fit than their southern counterparts. More active life styles and better eating habits.

It's a reason but it's not the major reason.

The major reason boils down to simple supply/demand. We don't have nearly the number of medical professionals available to meet the demand that UHC would create. Just the increase from the ACA has caused wait times to jump when scheduling an appointment with a doctor.

Take that extra time and at least double it for a true UHC system.

We never had any major issues using NHS when I lived in England, but the influx of immigrants from eastern Europe definitely put a strain on the system.
