At what point is the line drawn between 'protesting' and rioting?? NOLA has an article about the protesters from last night, then proceed to show pictures of public and private property vandalized.

Personally, I am all for protesting peacefully as I believe it is an important part of American democracy but I feel the media is ignoring the fact that these people are breaking the law

These are the vestiges of political correctness, and I think it will dissipate soon. Won't be long before the media can report criminal actions as "criminal" now; as the election has shown that there's a sizable portion of the population (read: potential viewers) that's had enough of the lawlwssness of the past year or so.

It will start with Fox, but I expect the other media will follow, if they want to remain relevant to the nation as a whole.

That the police department's job. My guess is that, first, you need a permit to assemble. Second, if you have a permit and then a bunch of you block traffic, you are now an unlawful mob. If a bunch of you start looting and assaulting people, you are no longer protesters, you are now a riotous mob. If the local police are doing their job correctly, they would use force to disperse the mob and use force to apprehend the ring-leaders and criminals in the mob.

Trump should make it a priority to make it known that HIS Dept of Justice wants state and local police to enforce the laws on unlawful assembly.

Some places require permits to protest.

Violent or destructive protesting/rioting should be put down with overwhelming force as soon as possible.

People blocking roads should be locked up for at least a month.

Remember the tea party. That was protesting. Yet the media called the tea party angry and violent and hateful.

They call the current rioters spirited and resilient.

as soon as a "protester" gets hurt, it will be the other sides fault. All hell will break out then.

The Advocate referred to it as "largely peaceful" because only one person was arrested (that arrest had nothing to do with the vandalism). Nobody was arrested because NOPD allowed these criminals to vandalize multiple buildings from Lee Circle to the Monteleone (that I know of). How do people, on foot, in the middle of the city, get away with that?

Mitch issued a "stern" statement today. I feel better.

Yep. First bloody nose (probably from a fellow protestor) will be made into an epic cover photo showing minority plight and abusive law enforcement due to the Trump effect.

aclu say a protest is not a march. that is in fact a rally

quote:

Do I need a permit before I engage in free speech activity? Not usually. However, certain types of events require permits. Generally, these events are: • A march or parade that does not stay on the sidewalk, and other events that require blocking traffic or street closure • A large rally requiring the use of sound amplifying devices; or • A rally at certain designated parks or plazas Many permit procedures require that the application be filed several weeks in advance of the event. However, the First Amendment prohibits such an advance notice requirement from being used to prevent rallies or demonstrations that are rapid responses to unforeseeable and recent events. Also, many permit ordinances give a lot of discretion to the police or city officials to impose conditions on the event, such as the route of a march or the sound levels of amplification equipment. Such restrictions may violate the First Amendment if they are unnecessary for traffic control or public safety, or if they interfere significantly with effective communication with the intended audience. A permit cannot be denied because the event is controversial or will express unpopular views.
