Not official yet. A majority of the 172 local presbyteries have to approve the measure. For those that don't know, there are 2 organizations of Presbyterians, the PCA and the USA. PCA is much more conservative than USA, though generally speaking their belief systems are very much the same.

(CNN) -- The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) voted Thursday to allow pastors to marry same-sex couples in states where it is legal, the church said on its Twitter account.
To become church law, the change would need to be approved by a majority of 172 local presbyteries.
"The church affirmed all its faithful members today. This vote is an answer to many prayers for the Church to recognize love between committed same-sex couples," said Alex McNeill, executive director at More Light Presbyterians, a group that supports gay rights.
"We will keep praying that the majority of our 172 presbyteries will confirm that all loving couples can turn to their churches when they are ready to be married."
The presbyteries have a year to vote on the change, according to Kathy Melvin, a church spokeswoman.
Close to half of the clergy in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) work in areas where same-sex couples can legally marry.

Looks like another Protestant denomination is on the way.

They could marry them in states where it is illegal too... It just wouldn't be recognized by the govt which goes back to the question again... WHY THE frick IS THE GOVT INVOLVED IN MARRIAGE

Does the church handle rights of inheritance, power of attorney, etc. that comes with being married?

Could one not simply file paperwork to declare these things to the government after a church ceremony?
So are atheists not allowed to marry?

ok. Good for them the way it should be. If a religious organization (like my episcopal church) votes to allow it wonderful. I still don't like the gay rights ppl suing to force ppl to make cakes and take photos. If they would stop those tactics I would be all for it.
ANOTHER REASON TO GET GOVERNMENT OUT OF MARRIAGE!!!!!

They could, like fricking reasonable people, but the government wouldn't call it "Marriage", and that causes some butthurt in the gay community.

The homosexual dummy.
Do you ever post about anything but perverted issues?
Those silly, ungodly people who voted to allow the abomination of homosexual marrige will have to answer for their evil sin, as will you and all other sodomites.
Judgment day will be on you and then what will be your ignorant view?
Brainwashed buffoons.

Anyone can get married if their church will marry them... The govt should not be in the business of deciding who can marry who. That is why I said "Why is the govt in the marriage business". For legal sakes, any "Marriages" should be civil unions according to the govt. Anyone should be able to enter into that union with whomever they see fit. Now if people want to be "Married", then they can go to a church and get that done, but the govt should not be involved.

How could you possibly draw a conclusion about a specific group being allowed or disallowed to marry while reading a post about government getting out of marriage entirely?
So where would an atheist couple get married if the government had no involvement in marriage?

they would join into a civil union like EVERYONE else... Then if they wanted the tag of "Married" they would find a church that would marry them.
frick, I'll open my own church and charge people to denote them "Married"
