The pope told Die Zeit on Thursday “populism is evil and ends badly as the past century showed.”

He also said he rejects any kind of cult around the papacy and that he’s a normal believer just like everyone else.

Francis said that, “I don’t see myself as anything special … I’m a sinner, I’m fallible.”

It is suspected his health was a problem.

What Francis says makes historical sense, but America's gov't does not lend itself to extreme control. He would be wrong in this case.

Piss on the pope. Fake arse anointed "holy leader". Give me a break, what a joke.

As a Catholic, I'm a bit concerned that this pope is kind of a cuck.

Any -ism can be exploited. This isn't news.

As a general statement, he is correct. Especially if the context of that statement is based on the rise of populism around the turn of the 20th century. To give this statement context, it's important to note that he was speaking to a German newspaper; that's pretty significant.

Freedom is never evil.

It's that damn Pope who is EVIL. John Paul II must be spinning in his grave over this looney toon.

I know the pope is technically a head of state, but we should view his comments as those of a priest.

While I don't like my politicians talking about socialism and income redistribution, I understand how a priest could be for these things. Especially one like the pope who represents a large population around the world.

It's funny how he doesn't consider the left-wing "spread the wealth around" message to be populist.

Pope Francis is trying to rebuild the Tower of Babel.

One would think he would know better.

Not surprising coming from a Pope from South America, specifically Argentina. The same country that produced Che Gueverra. He comes from a completely different world politically than what we have in the US. Therefore his political opinions (which should not matter anyway since, you know, the Catholic Church has a history of effing up politics) have no merit to us.

Well, I'm not sure if I agree with you or not. But it's not surprising that someone from Latin America would have negative views of populism.
