Politifact: Intellectual dishonesty among the 'fact-checkers'

One way to ruin a newspaper’s reputation is to make the news subservient to politics, which is what has happened at Politifact. The Obama administration is dear to Democrats, and the ACA, being threatened from several directions at once, is something that Democrats and so-called liberals feel the need to defend. Politifact, and by extension the Tampa Bay Times and the Poynter Institute (which owns the newspaper), is deploying rank and obvious intellectual dishonesty in the service of narrow, partisan political sympathies. It is detestable, and it deserves to be condemned by all those who care about newspapers—not only by the conservatives against whom its intellectual dishonesty is directed.

just curious but cant you check each one of Politifacts fact check by noting the anecdote they accompany with the meter and then read up on it yourself to see if they are telling the truth.
everytime I have they seem to get it pretty spot on even with a ranking system from true to pants on fire, they qualify the statement and usually the merits of the story agree with their assesment.

There should be a true or false answer only. No gray area. The media invented things like "moderately True" or "likely to be false"
I mean what the frick does that accomplish? All it does is open the doors for a spin

Why do you think everytime Trump beat Clinton on a talking point in the debates, her only reply would be, "Fact check! Fact check!" She knew they'd lie for her.

So your "proof" is an Op-Ed piece on a conservative news site?
That's pretty weak.

The problem with fact checkers goes beyond poor fact checking. In fact, the smart fact checkers are more insidious.
You can't fact check EVERYTHING. This is why all of the "let's compare FOX and CNN" or some other such thing is silly.
I can run a fact check site that is happy horse shite and NEVER lie. I can simply choose to only fact check things that support my narrative. I can ignore all questionable things that don't.
It's really not all that complicated.

Cool editorial, bro. I like the grammar in the title. Very professional.
Oh, this is from that same website:
Trump’s pick for Labor secretary is perhaps the worst person imaginable for that role: Andrew Puzder, CEO of CKE Restaurants, the parent company of fast-food chains Carl’s Jr., Hardee’s, and others. He is one of the nation’s most outspoken business voices for Gang of Eight-style immigration policies. He didn’t just sign an open letter once as a favor to a friend; he’s been a high-profile champion of amnesty and huge increases in immigration and guestworkers. This op-ed in Politico, timed to coincide with the launch of the Gang of Eight effort in 2013, could have been written by Jeb Bush. Here he is at AEI in 2013 making the case for importing more low-skilled workers. Here he joins with the Bloomberg-Murdoch Billionaires for Open Borders outfit and Grover Norquist in an effort to “push 2016 presidential candidates and congressional Republican leaders to support immigration reform this year.” There’s plenty more.

It's not necessarily the "fact-checking" that is wrong, although it can easily be argued that a high number of Politifact articles give the benefit of the doubt for Democrats while not doing the same for Republicans. Case in point, during the 2012 election I visited politifact and looked at some of the things they rated. For Obama they rated a number of his campaign promises as "in progress" even though they had either been shot down by Congress or he hadn't even attempted to get legislation passed on. While House Republican promises, such as repealing the ACA, were rated as "Failed" even though they actually did follow through on their part by passing legislation, in the House, to repeal the ACA.
One of the biggest issues with these websites is what they choose to fact check. If I wanted to I could create a website that only fact-checked True or "likely true" statements that Donald Trump has made while only giving choosing fale or "mostly false" statements from a Democrat. IF you only got your news from this fictional site then you would think that everything Trump says is true while everything his opponents say is false.
Politifact, and most fact checking websites, are a joke and full of hacks.

Bernie Sanders:
Donald Trump:
Bernie Sanders:
quote:
African-Americans between the ages of 17 and 20, "the real unemployment rate … is 51 percent." His terminology was off, but the numbers he used check out, and his general point was correct -- that in an apples-to-apples comparison, African-American youth have significantly worse prospects in the job market than either Hispanics or whites do. The statement is accurate but needs clarification or additional information, so we rate it Mostly True.
Donald Trump:
quote:
The unemployment rate is a widely used term with a specific definition: It refers to the percentage of jobless people in the workforce who are actively seeking employment. In May, the unemployment rate for blacks ages 16 to 24 was 18.7 percent, or less than one-third of Trump’s claim (of 59%).
quote:
Wait, now it is 18.7% when Politi"fact" said a year prior that Benie's 51% claim was "mostly true?" Interesting. Both candidates were referring to studies like the one below from the Economic Policy Institute which attempt to find true unemployment rates based on the number of people employed to the total population adjusted for those still enrolled in continuing education. On this basis, true white youth unemployment is in the mid-30s while black youth unemployment is in the low-50s after hovering around 60% for several years.

why would I be banned. because his experience with politifact or opinion of it is different than mine. your post makes no sense.
people on here, much like those in this thread rail on politifact and im just wondering why...you can check the veracity of their claims yourself and im my experience they are usually pretty accurate.
they give quotes, sourced and researched statements to back up their claims and rate the quotables so that you know either its patently true or false or lies somewhere between.

From one professional to another, it's probably best for your mental health if you don't.
