Politicians Recognizing Victims from 50+ Years Ago

Am I the only jaded person who looks at these events as nothing but publicity stunts for politicians to stroke their own egos and get a head pat? I saw in the paper that lawmakers are honoring victims of a Civil Rights bombing in 1964 with a Congressional Gold Medal. It is trumpeted as proof of bipartisan effort. Who is this really benefiting in the end besides politicians? The victims were kids so they don't have any grandchildren of their own to attend and most of their living relatives would be too young to even remember it.

Most of what politicians do can be characterized as nothing more than this.

The oldest guy on my family tree was named Francois (real name). He was a trapper in Nova Scotia, born in 1612. He and his wife, Marie, were kicked out by the British.
I'm still waiting for reparations from the crown.
