Politician must be the most thankless job ever.

Seriously, you are never going to please everyone. Someone will always be talking bad about you and your actions/initiatives.
It's no wonder politics attracts the largest collection of sociopaths, pathological liars, and criminals ever to hold public office. The job requirement is to lie, cheat, and steal. Who is better at it than the three types of people previously mentioned.

frick most politicians.
This isn't the West Wing. These people aren't making moral decision based on what they believe is best for the country. It may have been at one point but it isn't now. Its a billion dollar power struggle at the top.
The only politicians I feel for are those that actually want to make some progress in the country and are consistently marginalized. Those, however, are few and far between.

The media may have caught up with politicians as far as the number of scumbags in their midst. Very few decent people in either field.

I have often wondered how many people who would do a much better job refuse to even consider running.
I can't see anyone with any amount of sense seeking an elected office.

If politicians jobs are so thankless, how come they spend millions to get a job that pays a few hundred thousand?

I have no sympathy for them as the days of people doing this for pure reasons are long gone.

Most of them do nothing to appreciate.

Well, they're not really spending their money, for the most part, and if we're talking about Congress, they get all the insider trading tips and are free to use them. Seems the personal finances of most increase substantially over the length of their term. (Substantially might be an understatement.)
And while getting filthy rich(er), they can wield power. Some go into it for the power alone; feels good to wield it against a political enemy, or even the guy they just don't like.
So "thankless" is fine with them. They thank themselves every time they look at their balance sheets and/or when they look in the mirror.

See above for types of people jobs like this attract. If you are still asking the question, you didn't read the original post.

Most have chosen self enrichment over public service. For that they deserve no thanks!

That's not what attracts them to the job. They feel a special calling to serve the public. Just ask them.

Politicians are what they are because people are weak and easily manipulated. People want short-term answers to long-term problems and creates a political system where you want to get re-elected, so a politician does things to pacify an electorate. And change, people don't want change, they want the same old shite.

I don't know, some politicians do get thanks. IRS agents, though... no one ever gets excited about their returns being audited.
