Man we need a science board, but unfortunately, Renewable Energy/Climate Science has morphed in to as political a topic as any I have ever seen.

Interesting report by the National Academy of Sciences on the potential future energy capacity of Offshore Wind.

We need to make rational decisions about future energy needs and the best ways to meet them.

NAS Report offered for your edification.

weren't offshore wind farms proposed several years ago and one of the Dems were against it because of the "view" it would disrupt?

Keystone Engineering in Metairie has been working on wind farms for years. Don't know how much success they've had building their platforms though. Here it's really expensive.

The first offshore wind farm was installed off RI this time last year. A lot of challenges exist to them being more widespread.

I am surprised Musk isn't pushing for floating solar platforms as a rebuttal to the heat trapping argument against large farms, since water is also a heat trap.

Offshore wind farms can't document the number of birds killed because they would fall into the ocean and sink and become fish food.

Environmentalist hate birds!

Agree, but there's precious little rationality to be found on the TD Poli Board. Just a lot of quasi-literate alt-right propaganda.

As noted the first US offshore wind farm is installed and running.

The support structures (the portion below what would normally be an a terrestrial wind turbine) were designed by Keystone Energy out of their Metairie Louisiana office (HQ). They were fabricated at Gulf Island Fabrication in Houma Louisiana and one of the main installation contractors was MONTCO out of Louisiana.

Louisiana played an inordinately large roll in bringing that project to fruition.

if by democrat, you mean trump, yeah. He was against them in scotland for this exact reason.

But yeah, I think it was ted kennedy against cape cod wind farm, but so was Bill Koch.

Each development presents its own unique site specific challenges. Several other projects are currently in development on the US OCS.

The thread was going fine. This is why we can't have nice things.

Locals often oppose the siting of wind farms due to impacts to the "viewshed". IMO it is just more of the NIMBY attitude.

It is one of the issues considered during the NEPA consultation process.

They’ll tie 9/11 to Democrats if you give them enough space and time here

Floating wind turbine platforms have been deployed and larger projects are under development in order to site wind farms in areas of deep water (>100m).

Well, pird populations are very limited offshore. Most birds tend to stay over land. But that is still a concern. Bird radards are just one potential mitigation being developed.

The Cape Wind project was kille dby a coalition of Dems and Repubs (Koch being the main antagionist, but even the Kennedys were against the sighting within sight of Marthas Vinyard).

I was under the impression that they were Miles out in the ocean. Is that not true? Seems stupid if so. You can't see oil rigs from the beach usually.

I am not against them but I am against government subsidies to make them work economically. If they work, they work and should stand alone, period.

However, most of you coastal states have "horizon" limits for things like drilling rigs and I am certain they would be applied to wind farms as well. This will pose a problem for economic viability for them and when you couple that with the fact that I don't think you would want to build them in hurricane prone areas, you start to limit their application.
