I am having outpatient surgery and will be reading at least two books. I just read "Shattered."

Any other poli books like this that have the inside story? Or Secret Service Insider kind of books? I adore history/poli/sci fi type of books but it can't be too deep I will be on pain meds. I already have one book Ice Tiger hooked me up with Unacknowledged- Greer

Any others?

Thanks in advance

It has political themes: A Song of Ice and Fire by GRRM.

THE HBO show (and first book) are called Game of Thrones.

You're welcome.

If you've never read Witness by Whittaker Chambers, you owe it to yourself to read this. It's rather heavy but worth it. It chronicles the Communist Party Takeover of government during the 20's', 30's and 40's and explains much of the problems we have today with the deep state. Reagan Sid it was the seminal book in his life.

Fantasy. Swords and dragons and shite, but a lot of political maneuvering as well.

Slouching Towards Gomorrah by rejected SCOTUS nominee Robert Bork.

He laid it out 21 years ago.

quote:

Radical egalitarianism necessarily presses us towards collectivism because a powerful state is required to suppress the differences that freedom produces. That raises the sinister and seemingly paradoxical possibility that radical individualism is the handmaiden of collectivist tyranny. This individualism, it is quite apparent in our time, attacks the authority of family, church, and private association. The family is said to be oppressive, the fount of our miseries. It is denied that the church may legitimately insist upon what it regards as moral behavior in its members. Private association are routinely denied the autonomy to define their membership for themselves. The upshot is that these institutions, which stand between the state and the individual, are progressively weakened and their functions increasingly dictated or taken over by the state. The individual becomes less of a member of powerful private institutions and more a member of an unstructured mass that is vulnerable to the collectivist coercion of the state. Thus does radical individualism prepare the way for its opposite.

Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail, the election of 1972.

Funny and crazy and purported to be the most accurate book about presidential politics.
Hunter Thompson at his peak!!!

I'm reading P.J. O'Rourke's "How the hell did this happen?" Very good and funny so far,

What did you think of "Shattered?"

Because Conservatives are dumb right?

GFY.

That's one of the most egregiously false narratives the left has ever implemented.

The letter to my children that serves as the introduction to Witness, is some of the most profound writing ever. The last paragraph brings me to tears.

***Shattered, Spoiler Alert***

I enjoyed reading Shattered. But it is clear after it is all said and done it was written by democrats. They hold off on documenting her hissy fits but admit to her potty-mouth and anger somewhat.

The biggest take I got from it was... one of the campaign gurus had a literal million dollar bonus clause in their contract if she won. 'Muh Russians' was discussed as a way for them to save face. And IMO, it was mentioned as a blame tactic to maybe not to get accidentally robbed with nothing missing; to calm a certain persons shock and anger.

The book never revealed why she cancelled the fireworks. I presume because they saw WI and MI falling by the wayside; at the last minute?

My latest kick has been Clive Cussler books. They are usually modern enough to be relevant and you know they mirror parts of real life.

It's a great spy kick.

I have been a longtime Clive Cussler reader. Dirk Pitt is the James Bond of the sea.

First, prayers for a successful outcome and a smooth recovery!

Second, recommendations: Sharyl Atkisson's 'Stonewalled,' too good to miss. 'The Full Catastrophe: travels among the new Greek ruins,' excellent and accessible book about the Greek debt crisis, immigrant crisis, etc.

And if you want just some 'brain candy,' Southern-style, any of the books in the Miss Julia series by Ann B. Ross.

I agree, Chambers was an artist with words. He could tell a great story in a beautiful way.
