Seems like there is no harm if no foul. What's the biggest dispute aside from hating Trump?

I haven't been following.

Thanks.

Oh and ELI5 means explain like I'm 5.

1) Huge potential to be embarrassed with their shoddy proactices in keeping rolls up to date.
2) No upside

Here's What Alabama Said

quote:

"We want to be helpful. We want to encourage (the commission). We think they are trying to be helpful to the country but we're not sure we're going to provide everything they have asked for. We are not doing it on June 30 and we're not sure if it will be provided by July 14," Merrill said.

"We want to make sure our voter information is protected," Merrill told AL.com. "We want to be helpful but have to make sure information on our constituents is secure."

The only reason given is to "protect" voter's information from the Federal Government.

But........ what information on voters are states trying to protect that the Feds don't already have?

In order to vote in virtually every state, you have to provide one of the following:

driver license issued by the state Department of Public Safety (DPS)
Election Identification Certificate issued by DPS
personal identification card issued by DPS
license to carry a handgun issued by DPS
United States military identification card containing the person’s photograph
United States citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph
United States passport

Here is a list of the supporting forms of ID that can be presented if the voter does not possess one of the forms of acceptable photo ID and cannot obtain one due to a reasonable impediment:

Valid voter registration certificate
Certified birth certificate (must be an original)
Copy of or original current utility bill
Copy of or original bank statement
Copy of or original government check
Copy of or original paycheck
Copy of or original government document with your name and an address (original required if it contains a photograph)

What information provided by these documents do the Feds not already have?

The answer: None. The Feds already have all this information on each state's voters.

Therefore, the ONLY reasons why any state would not want to comply is to hide voter fraud or they are too damn lazy and incompetent to gather all the information and provide it in an organized manner.

They requested overreaching and irrelevantly info such as party affiliation. The laws are very clear as to what each state makes available and that's all they are entitled to

They don't want people to see how bad of a job they have done keeping people from voting that are not legal.

This. In most states I believe it is illegal at state level to release this much voter information to anyone. This includes the Feds.

Also, Do we really want to be on a freakin list held by the Feds!
