think something should fall
at? BTW there is no such thing as "speed of gravity". Gravity is an force, we measure as an acceleration.
How long do you think it takes an overloaded column to fail? Let's see you come up with a time constant to relate spring rate -> deflection -> to failure given an overload of... say 200% over yield. That is where you'd start... and you'd find that Tc is pretty damn close to 0. It's basic engineering. Castigliano knew that columns don't fail slowly like a beam in overload. They collapse instantly and suddenly.
