Obamacare Increases Medical Billing Complexity Nearly 5-fold

Just what the Doctor ordered

When squirrels attack! There’s a medical code for that.

The prospect of quadrupling the number of medical codes used in those calculations has touched off a heated debate over whether more specificity is an onerous layer of bureaucratic red tape — or a valuable chance to better understand and treat complex medical conditions.
The codes in ICD-10 can seem absurd in their granularity, replete with designations for seemingly impossible situations.
There are different numbers for getting struck or bitten by a turkey (W61.42 or W61.43). There are codes for injuries caused by squirrels (W53.21) and getting hit by a motor vehicle while riding an animal (V80.919), spending too much time in a deep-freeze refrigerator (W93.2) and a large toe that has gone unexpectedly missing (Z89.419).
At the AAPC conference in San Francisco, the organization sold shot glasses inscribed with “F10.950” — the code for an unspecified alcohol-induced psychotic disorder. “Give ICD-10 a shot!” it says in blue script.
Hospitals and insurers have fought the new codes, calling them a massive regulatory burden that will cost them billions of dollars to implement without improving patient care. For years, their protests succeeded: The federal government has twice delayed implementing the new code set, which was initially set for 2008.
ICD-10 proponents contend that adding specificity to medical diagnoses will provide a huge boon to the country. It will be easier for public health researchers, for example, to see warning signs of a possible flu pandemic — and easier for insurers to root out fraudulent claims.
“How many times are people going to be bitten by an orca? Probably not very many,” said Lynne Thomas Gordon, chief executive of the American Health Information Management Association. “But what if you’re a researcher trying to find that? You can just press a button and find that information.”

Sounds as if we could lie and die on the table while waiting to be coded.

This is a two step process. First it will be used for data mining.
secondly, it will be used to bilk hospitals and doctors out of reimbursements, as incorrectly coding an event can result in the loss of that reimbursement.
so yeah, this is another way to screw the already impoverished hospitals in america.

I can't wait to hear about some of the whacky combinations that get reported. How much do you reimbursed if you report that the patient lost a big toe after being knocked unconscious in a deep-freeze refrigerator when struck in the head by a falling turkey (the frozen kind)?

The data will be used to increase government involvement by either enlarging or creating new departments to study and deal with these new found hazards in order to protect the citizens of America better...

Well, I wasn't bitten by one, but on a very drunken St. Patty's night about 5 years ago, I was blown by one.

My wife has been learning this craziness off and on (seminars and conferences) for 5 years. It serves zero purpose for the actual medical care give. It's absurdly complex on purpose so the government can deny Medicare/Medicaid/Obamacare payments to facilities if the billing has mistakes.

NC_, are there different codes depending on if the missing big toe is on the left or right foot???

My wife says yes. There is no longer a left or right modifier. Left and right are seperate codes now.

"Looks like we have a Z89.419 here."
"No mam, while I am missing my big toe, everything is going exactly as planned."

Implementation of ICD-10 has absolutely nothing to do with Obamacare but that hasn't stopped conservatives from braying that lie to anyone who will listen.

That reminds me of the anecdote where two guys were debating if General Foods had a vice-president of peanut butter. So they called the main 1-800 number for General Foods and when the operator answered they asked to speak with the VP of peanut butter.
The operator replied, "Smooth or crunchy?"

My co workers wife went to get her Rx last week and was told her insurance had not approved it yet, but her pharmacist friend to her that if she just paid cash it would only be $28 instead of the $64 it would under her insurance.

Define nothing to do with?
Sure it might not be in the law so you an claim it's not in there, however if you haven't heard when you throw a rock in a pond there are ripples.
I would love for you to explain how obamacare has made healthcare more effiecent and cost effective. Oh and how it makes care better! TIA.
Be carefull because they have actual Docs and nurses on this board who actually do the work.

I guess one could say it is conceived by Obama's HHS, designed by Obama's HHS, foisted on the medical community by Obama's HHS, thus technically the blame for it should be directed at Obama's HHS rather than by Congressional directives in the ACA.
Better?
