You're on it, here. Plus, as someone who generally favors the GOP side, it frustrates me to see the Repubs play debt ceiling games it tends to turn off swing voters. Ultimately, the party against raising the debt ceiling will painted as the party risking US default on obligations.

The USA can't just obligate itself for billions of dollars and then tell people they can't pay them because of the debt limit.
The US has to meet its obligations, and whether those obligations are soc. security checks, medicare payments, payroll checks, payments for good received, etc.; the US has to pay those.
The time to discuss what we are spending is when Congress votes on the continuing resolution or other spending legislation. If Congress passes and the president signs legislation that is forecasted to exceed the debt limit, that's the time to raise hell. Not now. It's too late.
