quote:

Barack Obama appeared in a town hall for Spanish-language media on March 6th to discuss ObamaCare and promote enrollments, and got challenged by a viewer on the economics of it for low-income Americans who are now forced to buy comprehensive health insurance. On a $36,000 annual income, the requirement to buy the broad policy rather than something a little more economical — say, hospitalization coverage combined with an HSA, a strategy which is now all but illegal — makes it impossible to comply. Pshaw, Obama replied. Why, all those low-income folks need to do is stop spending money on luxuries like cable television and cell phones!

I think its funny he is pushing that angle after talking how unaffordable it is for the last 6 years.

So for the record you would rather someone pay for cable tv rather than health insurance?

Right. He would have scoffed at this line of thinking four years ago before his "solution" turned into a dumpster fire.

Holy frick!!

I'd rather my Gov not MANDATE either.

These people weren't complaining before. They are complaining NOW that Obamacare has priced them out.

frick!!

I truly hoped your first post was satirical and sarcastic.

JEEBUS!!

I agree with the man, no only if he'd express that thinking to all of the programs...

Do you not see how foolish your question was? Or you accept the mandate as "personal responsibility"?

They weren't complaining because they weren't buying it. They then were costing the private enterprise money by showing up and not paying a bill. Obamacare isn't the answer for many reasons but his quote that this thread is about has nothing wrong with it.

1) You are projecting...and sound like Harry Reid

2) So what? PERSONAL responsibility

To begin with, if you looked at the video, Obama did not say the above. Those are the sarcastic words of the author of that piece. While Obama used cell phones and cable tv as examples, his message was that lower income people need to prioritize their purchases because if you end up in a hospital, $300 per month is a relatively small amount to pay.

His point was that you may be young and healthy today, but you also need to prepare for needing the ability to pay for health care (in this case a family of three).

Now, I was not a proponent of the ACA when it was in legislation, however, now it is the law of the land, the American thing to do is to support it and give it a chance to succeed since maximizing participation is the best scenario under current law. Republicans have done all they can to sabotage this program, even wasting time and money trying to defund it, yet they have not offered an alternative to it.

Where we are now, I'd like to see it reformed and continued. And putting the responsibility on one to pay for their insurance, instead of mooching off the public when the need arises, seems like a pretty good idea to me.

Obamacare is the "law of the land" yet they continue to push the mandates off for political reasons.

Who says that the people weren't prioritizing their purchases prior to ACA mandates? The government is mandating a false priority on the people.

Couldn't the same argument be used against proposed raises to minimum wage?

While I agree that people need to get their priorities straight, I thought the whole purpose of the "affordable care act" was to make health insurance... you know... affordable.

If people wanted to cancel their cable and a cell phone plan in order to purchase health insurance, they could have done that before Obamacare.
