President Obama has seized more than 553 million acres of land and water (roughly 865,000 square miles) and placed it under federal ownership and control – enough square mileage to cover the entire state of Texas more than three times over. In fact, the self-aggrandizing conservationist-in-chief has placed more land and coastal areas under federal control than any other president in history, shutting off millions of miles of land to energy production or human settlement, along with shifting it outside the scope of local and state jurisdictions.

Forward bitches!

I think a revision of the Antiquities Act is in order...and since the lease/sale/return of those lands would have an influence on the budget, it could be done via reconciliation.

Don't worry, Trump will MAGAly give it back.

Just like he'll end war for profit, repeal Obamacare, and build a wall.

It might take a court challenge of the existing law or rewriting the Antiquities Act. But much of Obama's actions can be changed quickly. From the Wall Street Journal:

LINK

quote:

The original purpose of the Antiquities Act was to protect archaeological sites and historic landmarks that “in all cases shall be confined to the smallest area compatible with proper care and management of the objects to be protected.” After studying the president’s legal authority, we conclude that he can rescind monument designations—despite the cursory but contrary view of Attorney General Homer Cummings in 1938. The history of presidential abuse led Congress in 1950 and 1980 to limit the act’s use in Wyoming and Alaska, respectively. While Congress could limit it further, the law’s text and original purposes strongly support a president’s ability to unilaterally correct his predecessors’ abuses.

I am not a lawyer but it is clear the constitution intended for Congress to establish permanent laws, not the president. The Antiquities Act should not be able to override that.

^^^^^

When such unilateral power is expressly given to the Executive, the Executive is impliedly vested with the power to modify/rescind.

No thanks. I'll wait for the cliffnotes or otherwise won't worry about it and go about with my life.

How the left doesn't see how close their ideology and this President is to Communist Soviet Union is beyond me.

Quite snarky this morning eh?

There is a difference between casual curiosity and a burning passion. I reserve my research for burning passions, not casual curiosity.

That is pretty much what this board is about. Lots of people have differing passions and many more have passing curiosity. I am curious about what the passionate people say/think as a curiosity - and will contribute opinions based on logical interpretations of information presented. I am not motivated to engage in deep research to do battle with the passion-driven.

If someone wants to pass out 'homework' assignments - piss on 'em - I graduated from that drill decades ago.

Not at all. He was asking for more information. If he is truly curious it is out there and readily available, and there is very recent knews about the Obama land grab. It is far from "deep research" needed.

His follow up comment just showed laziness. If he's curious, he can easily find the info, if not, what is the point to his comment? If you don't care enough about the information to know more and do a simple google search, then commenting in this thread in the first place is unnecessary.

Do you know how much Trump will have to seize to build his wall?

This is an absolute lie. The 1.3 million acres designated as Bear Ears National Monument were already owned by the federal government.
