Given their track record, how is it they haven't mistakenly fricked up and actually hit something they didn't really intend to hit with these things? I mean, at some point that's bound to happen, no?

If I remember my oceanography, The EEZ or exclusive economic zone is the waters around a country where they have the rights to drill, fish, mine, etc.
For example, the US has state and federal waters. The EEZ starts where Federal waters end, so saying it hit Japan's EEZ doesn't mean it came close to anything. That could be 100's of miles off shore.
I'm not excusing the behavior, but the waters they are talking about are not close to the coast.

I believe the EEZ extends 200 miles offshore. Could be wrong but I think I've read that before.
