If you are an unskilled laborer, or any worker for that matter, you don't have a right to a certain level of pay, just like a company doesn't have a right to a certain profit margin

What does

Have to do with

quote:

If you are an unskilled laborer, or any worker for that matter, you don't have a right to a certain level of pay, just like a company doesn't have a right to a certain profit margin

Because many anti-immigration folks say immigration is bad because it lowers pay

Honestly, the labor angle is the least relevant reason for having a decent immigration policy.

The fact that we live in an attractive nation of 360M people and there are 7B people on the planet is the reason.

Well it does. But you're comparing an illegal act with market forces. It's apples and oranges.

I know you fancy yourself the board contrarian on occasion, but this is a pretty weak effort on your part.

I think you need to flesh this one out a bit better and return.

No one is saying that.

But your government, which is supposed to protect its sovereignty (and, by extension, that of the persons who constitute the government ["We the People"]), should not be pursuing immigration policies that will decimate your ability to earn a living.

The problem is that the playing field is unlevel due to statutory minimum wages. Citizens cannot choose to work for less, but immigrants can. Businesses are not allowed to pay less, but they do and face no consequences.

As long as we insist on having a minimum wage, we cannot tolerate allowing wholesale employment of illegal immigrant labor beneath that wage. We must either enforce these wage restrictions or do away with them entirely.

Breaking the law is not "the market."

And I personally don't give a frick about the impact on wages. I am for strict immigration reform for many other reasons.

Are you talking about legal immigration or illegal aliens?

Now you're talking, lol. How long would it take to fix/enforce immigration policy if it was CEO's, CFO's, lawyers, liberal professors, politicians, etc. crossing the border? Answer, decades ago.

The only people who are not concerned about illegal/mass immigration are the people who believe their jobs are not at risk.

Ask the IT folks who've lost their jobs the past 10-15 years to foreign workers, those people thought they were hawt shite in the 90's, irreplaceable. Lol!

Not in Louisiana it doesn't. IT salaries vary greatly by region.

Most illegal workers aren't getting paid below the minimum wage, it's kind of a non factor. Hell in CA you can file a DoL complaint and they can't ask about your status.

They're not in this labor market legally and have unfair advantages over US citizen workers. Clown post, bro.

Maybe so. But in many cases we really have no idea what illegals are paid, as the transactions are passed through coyote-like intermediaries.

If this were a discussion involving migrants with work visas, it would be more clear cut.
