free! Free! FREE!

Well, they did it.

Free for who? Certainly not the taxpayer.

quote:

New York will be the only state in the country to offer universal public college tuition coverage for working- and middle-class residents after the program was included in the budget package approved Sunday night.

The state's Excelsior Scholarship program will be rolled out in tiers over the next three years, starting with full coverage of four-year college tuition this fall for students whose families make less than $100,000.

The income cap will increase to $110,000 in 2018 and $125,000 in 2019.

That word gets used frequently, but I'm not sure people know what it means.

Could be a pretty solid plan for the state of New York. This provides a major incentive for people to move there, which will result in a potentially major economic boom.

There is some print in there that's not getting much play that is important.

"Free" after all grants and loans. For only those whose families already make less than $100,000/year. For tuition only (not room and board). At universities whose tuition is typically only $5,000 - $10,000 per year.

It's only going to amount to a few hundred or thousand per year for the vast majority of students to whom this would even apply.

It's window-dressing to make Cuomo look good and won't actually have any material effect. A (seriously) good plan that is going on is Mitch Daniel's thing at Purdue. That applies to many more people and has a greater impact.

Or other states being affected go the "free" route as well and a whole area has another entitlement program to fund.

We have too many college grads now and not enough decent jobs.

I'd be impressed if it included subsidies for trade schools and apprenticeships though. Not everyone wants or needs to go to college.

Entitlement programs are never good. this doesn't help the business owner and at the end of the day, the tax-paying citizens of New York are going to foot the bill.

The people who move there for this don't pay taxes. Their parents do. Their parents aren't going there for higher taxes...and their taxes will have to go up, or they will be asking the Federal Government to bail them out of another bankruptcy situation.

And there is the key. When everybody has a college education, it cheapens the college education. And the way they are dumbing down tests, etc.....more dumb people with sheepskins. It will not be beneficial.

Which is why they needed a master plan to get it done. The big money guys will pay a lot, while the poors get free college for their kids, sounds like your classic scheme...

Since it is free, why not give them a FREE monthly stipend, a FREE place to stay while in the free college, a FREE car to go to and from the free college, and free healthcare as they are busy doing college stuff. Just make it all FREE.

Were thousands and thousands of people not already moving to NYC? I don't know I'm sure they picked some arbitrary # to use for who gets free college and who doesn't and the middle class again will pay.

I would imagine a set of parents with 4 school aged children would gladly take the yearly, small tax hike on $99,000 if it means sending their kids or future kids to college for "free."

If you have 4 kids, that's a total savings of up to $160,000 - assuming 10K per year per child.

Again, "free" in this instance is after grants and loans.

Figure property tax on a home large enough for a family of six times how ever many years it will take 4 kids to get through college.

State income tax for household income of $100k is around $4700. Plus there's a higher state sales tax as well.

I don't see how someone with 4 kids moving from, say, Florida, will come out ahead on this deal.
