NC dumps teacher tenure & automatic pay increases

LINK

quote:

North Carolina legislators have approved a proposal to revoke teacher tenure from public school teachers in the state. Katherine Mangu-Ward of the Reason.com blog explains that teachers will no longer qualify for lifetime tenure after 5 years on the job. Instead, those who perform well will be offered 4-year contracts, while those who do not will have to make do with 1- or 2- year agreements.

Tenure allows teachers to avail themselves to the due process before they can be dismissed. According to Mangu-Ward, this change will finally make it easier for schools to get rid of its chronic under-performers.

Tenure is not the only thing that will change now that Republican Governor Pat McCrory has put his signature on the state’s budget last week. In addition to the tenure change, teachers will also now lose an automatic pay increases they’ve received in the past for earning a master’s degree.

Step in the right direction, IMO

Yes, definitely a step in the right direction! Hopefully it will light a fire under the derrieres of others in other states.

While I support this, the republicans can say bye bye to NC in national elections.

That's what it's all about......winning elections. Do the right thing and lose, do the wrong thing and win. That'll work out well for the nation.

No kidding. With the current expectations on teacher practice, we need more teachers with added education in psychology and research-driven pedagogy not less.

Congrats on killing the professional development of your education force, NC.

Some are, and some are woefully underpaid.

I'm very, very skeptical of the practical value of this

Few if any occupations outside of teaching provide automatic pay increases for obtaining advanced education, tuition reimbursement is usually the only thing offered in the corporate world. The motivation for advanced education is to improve your level of job performance, and increase the possibility of moving to a higher level position.

I don't find a $4000 step increase as too steep a price to pay for a highly degreed teacher. With the current cost of higher education, do you really think teachers are banking that extra money?

Be that as it may, a teacher is not going to self-finance a $20k advanced degree with no hope of some financial payoff. What you're going to get are teachers taking a few low-rent "classroom management" online courses to satisfy CEU requirements. Since there is no defined teaching ladder in the profession, those who do pursue an advanced degree will likely do so with the intent of leaving the teaching ranks entirely.

So what has been accomplished?

Ah...someone who gets this.

Coming soon to North Carolina...an exodus of educational professionals.

I mean why would we want to increase the education of our educators? Madness I tell you.

I'm guessing they are going the route GA went. You now have to go to an accredited university (looking at you Lincoln Memorial) and if you get a degree in admin you have a certain amount of years to become an administrator or you lose your raise.
