So Podesta group was lobbying for the same thing they are trying to nail Manafort for. And was also not registered as a foreign agent.
Plus what Manafort was lobbying for goes strongly against what Russians want. The last thing Putin/Russia wants is Ukraine to gain membership to the EU.

Its a matter of economics. Russia depends heavily on natural gas exports and Ukraine is a huge consumer plus the pipeline flows through Ukraine into Europe.
He in no way wants Ukraine being brought into the European market and further away from Russia's control.
Unless Putin was/is making some 4d chess move Im not seeing. He has been pretty open in opposition to such a move as EU membership for Ukraine.
ETA: if not for the gas export factor, I think you have a valid point. Putin got the main thing he wanted/needed from Ukraine which was the port of Crimea. The only other major entanglement is any situation that has potential to cause uncertentity in Russia's natural gas exports as its a lynch pin of their economy.
