Mike Lee had the plane ticket, the Miami hotel suite, and the buy-in. All he needed was for Marco Rubio to show up.

In the week before the Florida Republican primary in March, Lee headed early to the GOP presidential debate there with a mission: to convince one Senate friend, Rubio, to ally with another, Ted Cruz, and form a unity ticket to block Donald Trump from winning the Republican nomination.

quote:

"Cruz was serious enough about the alliance that he authorized Sen. Mike Lee of Utah to go to Miami ahead of the CNN debate there on March 10 to help work out a deal," the authors write.

"I think the two of them as running mates would have been unstoppable," Lee later told CNN. "They would have united the party."

Though Rubio was initially open to the unity idea, according to two sources familiar with the talks, he declined the meeting with Lee, who bought the ticket at his own expense.

Lyin Ted is a dirty mofo. Marco knew he had to be on the right side of history and with his HUGE win in Florida he's back!

You serious? Little Marco passed up the chance to ride Cruz's coat-tails into the WH. Other than needing to keep the Senate I didn't care if Jeb 2.0 won his re-election bid or not.

Are you serious? There was only 1 man who could slay the Clinton/establishment/MSM dragon. His name is Trump

I also believe that. Cruz nor Rubio had the charisma to go head to head and Rubio always struck me as unhinged when he got flustered. Which is why I'll never understand when people claim "Ahhh yea, Rubio would've beat HRC by 20 points minimum!" There really is no basis for that. They couldn't even win their own party WITH INTERVENTION.

There was no enthusiasm for Hillary. Trump struggled with the conservative votes, but did pick up a lot of Democrat votes in the Midwest and Northeast.

I think any of the candidates would have beat Hillary because she was so awful and unlikable by the Democrats. They would have done worse with Democrats, but better with Republicans, imo.

How quickly people forget that over half the Republican Party didn't want Trump as the nominee. He benefitted from a crowded field. A Rubio-Cruz ticket would have guaranteed one of them the nomination, the problem is that both of their egos are too big to take the VP slot.
