Mexico's Zetas drug cartel leader captured

quote:

The notoriously brutal leader of Mexico's feared Zetas drug cartel was captured in a pickup truck near the border city of Nuevo Laredo Monday, officials said, in what is the first major blow against an organized crime leader by a Mexican administration struggling to drive down persistently high levels of violence.

Miguel Angel Trevino Morales, 40, was also found with $2 million in cash as he was captured by Mexican Marines on a dirt road in the countryside outside of Nuevo Laredo, a city opposite the Texas border which has long served as the Zetas' base of operations. The truck was halted by a Marine helicopter and Trevino Morales was taken into custody along with a bodyguard and an accountant and eight guns, government spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told reporters.

quote:

On Trevino Morales' watch, 72 Central and South American migrants were slaughtered by the Zetas in the northern town of San Fernando in 2010, authorities said. By the following year, federal officials announced finding 193 bodies buried in San Fernando, most belonging to migrants kidnapped off buses and killed by the Zetas for various reasons, including their refusal to work as drug mules.

Trevino Morales is charged with ordering the kidnapping and killing of the 265 migrants, Sanchez said.

Certain Jay Carney will explain that pickups were provided by the DOJ as part of the fast and furious program. Plan was to bust them doing the Tokyo drift across the border.

Yep. Nothing new for that group.

the Zetas authored some of the worst atrocities of Mexico's drug war, leaving hundreds of bodies beheaded on roadsides or hanging from bridges

These cartels are setup like fortune 500 companies most likely. They'll have a new CEO and be up and running full force within a fiscal quarter.

they will probably try to put in a new leader...but there will be those loyal to Morales, which will weaken it from within and eventually cause it to crumble. thats usually how these mafia groups end up falling.

Jesus that is a baseless and reactionary comment.

Please don't respond. I don't need to be infected by your stupidity beyond that comment.

Not quite. The next successor more than likely will be his brother Omar who although is more violent, doesn't have the knack to head up Los Z's.

He'll get stuck or be in prison before long (Omar that is).

I don't think that will happen.

The Zetas started out as a anti-drug paramilitary unit before switching sides.

Due to this they have always had a pretty define order of rank in their organization that allows them to move guys up as members fall.

And Omar will probably take the head position and they will maintain order among their organization and when Omar goes down the next one will step up.

That is one of the reasons the Zetas have been such a strong presence. They don't have as much inner turmoil as other criminal organizations.

With the amounts of $ on the line there will ALWAYS be new leaders/soldiers willing to move up or join.

Here is a what looks like a pretty recent mapping of the Cartels Territories.

You can see how large an area the Zetas control and that a large part of Narcotics that come to Louisiana are supplied by the Zetas.

Well they also captured Chapo Guzman...and then he escaped from prison and went right back to running a cartel.

I'll be impressed when he's tried and executed. I don't know about Mexico's position on the death penalty, but these guys need to be put down with extreme expedience when they are captured.

Any word yet on if the guns they caught him with came from Eric Holder?

I'm really curious to see if that happens. I can't say it didn't cross my mind as I read the article.

Saw the video of the guy walking alongside camo'd policia/military but there was something askew if they had themselves a prisoner.

No handcuffs, the guy was walking alongside them unemcumbered and unrestained. I'm not so sure this guy doesn't "escape" too.
