Memphis Police Director Approves KKK Rally Permit

quote:

(Memphis) The City of Memphis has issued a permit for the KKK to host a demonstration March 30.
The protest was prompted by the city council removing three Confederate related names from Memphis parks.
The permit was approved by Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong.
Protestors will not be allowed to cover their faces or carry any weapon

quote:

, “It will be in all of our best interest to have a demonstration where we are able to work with this group in setting the do’s and dont’s. Right now, my team has a strategy that will ensure everyone’s safety. What we absolutely do not want is some unplanned, spontaneous demonstration where my team has not been involved in planning and set-up.”

I don't know if anyone has heard anything about this, but the Klan is attempting to have its largest rally ever. The city recently decided to change the name of three city parks.

quote:

On Tuesday the Memphis City Council passed a resolution to rename three Confederate-themed public parks in Memphis, including one named after the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Confederate Park is now known as Memphis Park, Jefferson Davis Park is henceforth Mississippi River Park and Nathan Bedford Forrest Park -- named after the Confederate Army lieutenant general and KKK leader -- is now Health Sciences Park.

quote:

"Y'all are going to see the largest rally Memphis, Tennessee, has ever seen. It's not going to be twenty or thirty -- it's going to be thousands of Klansmen from the whole United States."

This is going to get interesting because the last time the Klan held a rally in Memphis apparently the police had to go into full riot control. They started throwing out the tear gas on people.

As much as I can't stand the Klan, I can agree with them on this issue, but probably not for the same reasons. I can't stand things like what the city is doing. They plan to ignore our history to appease today's PC culture.

as long as it's non-violent and not disturbing the peace, what's the problem here?

Freedom of speach unless it's something you don't agree with?

Yeah, everyone has the right to congregate peacefully regardless if their views.

I say this even though I hate those guys.

Where did I say I had an issue with it?

I'm all for keeping things as real as possible and, like you, I abhor how PC some aspects of our culture can be, but in this case.. do you know just how much of a racist piece of shite Nathan Bedford Forrest was? Having a park named after him is shameful, IMO. And it's the City Council's right to change that name if they so wish (they were voted by the citizens of Memphis).

Yeah that is the only one I don't really mind them changing, but who is it really effecting other than people looking for an issue to have with it.

I agree with you 100%, but I wonder if Al Qaeda could get a rally permit in this this country. Make no mistake, I feel the same way about them as I do about the KKK, but would they be able to get a rally/parade permit?

Well for one thing, it's Easter weekend. This girl will be out of town. I live downtown and if I didn't already have plans to leave I'd make some to avoid it.

Do they have the right to protest? Absolutely, as they should.

Do I think it will remain peaceful? Doubtful. At the very least because someone is going to do something stupid like counter-protest violently.

It is interesting that they can't cover their faces, and curious to see how it affects the size and scope of the rally.

Honestly, if people are pissed, the best thing they can do is ignore it so they won't come back.

Not a fair comparison:

Al Qaeda is a recognized Terror Organization and at "war" with the U.S. currently.

I'd bet some other Radical Islam type group could.

Yeah, Bedforrest was so racist that when he got older he renounced his racist ways and called for the help for AA community. That's how racist he was.

While true for most of his life, Forrest changed his tune late in life. He actually spent the last few years of his life advocating for Black civil rights.

The KKK is a terror group too, and if the folks requesting the permit are U.S. citizens, what's the constitutional basis for denying it?

Are Tennessee KKK guys worse than Illinois Nazis? I hate Illinois Nazis.

On a different note, I'm not sure why it's necessary to change the name of the Jeff Davis park.
