You guys wonder why men get tougher sentences for this same crime? It's because of this attitude that it's more ok for a woman to do this than a man.
This woman has done serious psychological harm to this young man that will take him years to unravel. She abused her position of authority and the young man, despite what we think, is not capable enough or mature enough to say no.

My problem with this is that the kid is at the age of consent. The reason it was a chargeable offense is because she is a teacher. Had she just been his neighbor that worked at an insurance office, 100% legal.
The age of consent should be the age of consent.

Cannot agree with you one this - the 'crime' is certainly not horrendous, but it should be maintained as criminal activity for its deterrent value. Perhaps categorize it as statutory sex harassment.

That's just it, though. Sexual harassment isn't a crime. It's a civil matter. And I understand the danger of having teachers be in a position to extract sexual favors from students in exchange for grades, recommendations, etc. That's disgusting.
But from the perspective that a 17yo is an adult (at least for the purpose of sexual consent) that should, in a strict legal sense, be little different from an employer or other influential person being able to do the same to another adult. And while it's a shitty, fire-able offense (and probably a tort) it doesn't require criminal charges to address.
