quote:

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell bowed to pressure tonight from conservatives — and President Trump — to bring up a straight repeal of most of the Affordable Care Act as the next step now that the Senate health care bill appears to be dead. It will be based on the repeal bill Congress passed in 2015, which then-President Barack Obama vetoed.

quote:

His statement: "Regretfully, it is now apparent that the effort to repeal and immediately replace the failure of Obamacare will not be successful. So, in the coming days, the Senate will vote to take up ... a repeal of Obamacare with a two-year delay to provide for a stable transition period to a patient-centered health care system that gives Americans access to quality, affordable health care."

quote:

Reality check: It's highly unlikely to succeed, but conservative groups won't consider the GOP's health care promises to be fulfilled until Republicans have at least tried a straight repeal vote. It will put enormous pressure on the moderates, who are sure to have reservations. But as conservatives will remind them, most of them already voted for straight repeal in 2015 — and it will be hard to explain why they wouldn't do it again.

So says McConnell. We'll see, but i don't have faith in the GOP. Never really did in the first place.

This is the way to go rather than pussyfooting around with obamacare-lite that would collapse as well.

I don't understand how many here were so naive to think it would ever actually get repealed.

They weren't naive. They were just all in. Still are.

The problem is it won't come close to working. There are far too many GOP congressmen and women who stand to lose votes over it.

And you forget, Trump was elected in part by blue collar moderates in the Midwest who generally support Obamacare and benefit from it.

Believing they could ever get enough idealistic conservative representatives in Congress at the same to all out repeal it is at best naïveté and at worst stupidity. There will NEVER be that many GOP members of Congress willing to sacrifice themselves for that cause.

Yep. Their backs are against the wall now as they've run out of excuses. They're running out of options to keep the charade going.

Maybe they could throw in some garbage legislation with the repeal bill to keep it from passing. Or stall until the midterms and hope they lose enough seats to have an excuse.

They better do something quick because people are starting to wake up

It is not going to get repealed. This is what happens with entitlements. They are impossible to take away.

Always assume the "at worst" scenario

You think they just ignored Trump's constant drumbeat of repealing and replacing obamacare? Unsuspecting they are on board as well.

That's exactly what they did

You don't understand how much those type of people hate illegal Mexican labor and government legislation hamgstringing their industries.

Good. If I'm McConnell I put the bill to a vote even if it's doomed to fail. Better to have on record who the turncoats are so they can be primaried in future elections.

Good, repeal it. Once repealed, the democrats lose the talking point about "fixing" Obamacare. They either deal on a simple market based plan or be seen as obstructionist

This is the unfortunate truth.

Notice also:
quote:

They are ALWAYS thinking about re-election.

It happens more than you think. People are quick to criticize entitlements even if they are on them. "I only use ______ because I need it, those other people are leeching off the system though."

I once had a friend who was bitching about democrats and entitlements meanwhile his kids were on ARKids First (a tax-subsidized health care program for low-income families).

He was a hardcore republican because of "muh abortions and muh 2nd amendment" but that didn't stop him from using tax money to supplement his income as a youth pastor making $9/hr.
