Haven't read any references to both movies. I remember when MC came out in 1962. Riveting film. Then it was banned for 25 years because JFK was assassinated. I have still never seen it on classic TV channels.

Are any of you old enough to remember the controversy? I also remember the legislation after JFK's assassination. Prior to, it was within 1st amendment to say "I'm gonna kill the President." After JFK it became a federal offense to utter those words. Some people got arrested at bars.

Ah, those were the days. Kim Jong Un has probably had more poon tang than JFK. But he has a similar complying press.

It wasn't exactly banned. Sinatra refused to release it.

Why?

Edit: I don't know how old you are. You may be working from an historical perspective. I'm working from remembering IRL while it was happening.

There was no talk of Sinatra banning it. Sinatra did not control the film. He an actor in the film. The press was saying that this could cause more assassinations. That's why the "you can't say I'm gonna kill the President" law went in place.

What does a compliant press have to do with making threats against the President? If you long for the good ol' days, there is still plenty of bad shite you can say about the Prez.

The film rights reverted to Sinatra after a period of time-I want to say 7 years. As a personal friend of JFK, he kept the film out of circulation once he had control of it.

So, why wasn't it shown in the intervening 7 years?

Why don't you have a snack while the adults have a conversation? Here's a pic of a nice puppy.

When I was 12 years old, a man who lived 7 miles away from my family's home here in central NH threatened to kill Kennedy and was arrested by the Feds with dynamite and charged with intent to blow up President-elect Kennedy. It was a huge story where I lived, since the guy was local, even though the assassination attempt and arrest took place in Florida.

First of all, The MC is shown all the time on classic TV. It was never banned. It was even re-made, with Denzel, a few years ago. LINK

1. It was banned.
2. Your link doesn't work.
3. You have no idea what you're talking about.
4. Have a very merry Xmas!

I don't understand the emoticon. The man lived in Belmont NH ( I lived in Laconia NH, the adjoining town) and he drove with his dynamite to the Kennedy Compound in Palm Beach, FL, to try to kill Kennedy. It was a major story at the time.

Google the name Richard Paul Pavlick.

eta, okay I see what you were getting at, I omitted the word "attempt". Will correct it.

Uh, your Snopes link says that MC was pulled by Sinatra in 1972. Uhhhh, that's 10 years after it was banned. Can you count?

Where? On Tv?

Should we discuss the countless better pics that never were shown on tv in he 60s? Or were you super special and had cable back then?

And just for hilarity, it was released in 62 and was the Thursday nite movie of the week in 65. In fact,IT WAS THE FREAKING DEBUT. :rotflmao:

Now, how are you going to try and weasel your way out of the facts.

Wut? Again, the film was never "banned". Not in the US of A, at least. Frank never re-upped on the distribution deal, which is why it wasn't shown for a while after '73.

"special"? Are you serious? I lived in a small town in a rural area between the NH lakes and mountains and we had cable TV in 1960. Watched the Yankees game daily on WPIX out of NYC. Best of both worlds - getting both Red Sox and Yankees games regularly when you're a kid. and never felt we were "special" as a blue-collar working class family in a blue-collar factory town.

Zach - I read the book and years later saw the movie on TV - don't remember when the TV movie was shown.

And I don't remember any controversy about it back in the day but I didn't have time to take note of political minutia back in the mid-sixties.

Just don't remember any of that at all. Must have been played low-key in the Houston area if it happened.
