Companies in the nation’s second-largest city must stop requiring job applicants to disclose criminal convictions on hiring forms next year after Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti signed a “Ban the Box” law there on Friday.

sorry for linking this loathesome website

This seems like an absolutely gross government overreach. Do people actually support this crap?

Does that mean pedo's can now teach kindergarten? Does that mean background checks can't be run also?

I completely support the right of the city of Los Angeles to pass laws that further motivate businesses to relocate to places that are better suited for their interests.

(But if someone applies for a job at your place, can't you just look their history up on your own if you're so concerned with it?)

It means don't crumple up the applications of felons immediately after they leave the room... give them a fair shot to win you over and prove they can do a job

I absolutely support this.

The felony label on people should be removed once their sentence is paid if their crime was nonviolent.

The label costs our country literally hundreds of millions of dollars due to lower economic ceilings for those labeled with the scarlet "f", and leads to the high recidivism rate in our country.

What kinds of felons would you be okay with at your business?

Would be nice to know if who you hire to preform home inspections has bulglary charges.

Or if you who you hire as a taxi driver has multiple DUIs

Or if who you hire as a security guard has an assault charge resulting in anger management courses.

Just saying

Sometime in the near future, the question will be, "Why didn't somebody connect the dots?," and the answer will be, "we didn't have any dots."

If I'm in sales, drug dealers.
If I'm in security, thieves.
If I'm in IT, hackers.

And then when they don't do a good job and you fire them, they will kill you and rape your family. Viva LA!

I've got a solution... Don't get a fricking felony if you don't want to be labeled as a felon.

Simple solution for the simple minded.

All this does is prevent your first impression from being that of a criminal. Once you get the offer, they still will run a background check. Then they might decide that the crime you committed is a deal breaker. It isn't taking away any rights from hiring businesses.

It would make sense to eliminate race, gender, age, and even someones name from a job (or college) application if you ask me. People shouldn't be hired (or accepted to college) because of their race, gender, or age. And someone's name can give away their gender. You should advance in the selection process because of your skills and experience.

If a person embezzles 250k from one company you don't think other companies should have the right to know?

There is something called "negligent hiring" where a company should have excluded a 5 time DUI recipient of from driving their company truck. But they didn't and he kills a family of 4 on their way home from the mall. That company is now going to be sued because they were supposed to know.

This is the shite that will happen now because you can't ask about former crimes. Live with your past, you made it.

They'd find out with a background check.

No

This is stupid idea, but it doesn't mean pedos are going to be teaching school or that you can't get rid of felon's applications.

All it means is that you either run a background check prior to the interview or bring in people who may or may not be felons and then ask them if they are felons.

Stupid and annoying but not a huge disaster.
