How can the city force anyone to shovel snow?

"The Southie 76-year-old cited for failing to shovel her walk said she’s received a huge outpouring of support in her attempt to appeal the $200 fine — and one person even offered to pay the ticket if city officials fail to answer her pleas.

The Herald reported yesterday that Walsh, a lifelong South Boston resident, was one of 500 people hit with citations for failing to shovel their sidewalks over the past week. Walsh said she had no problem dealing with last Thursday’s storm but could only chip away half of the ice left by Sunday’s rapidly freezing slush."

Unless they pay you, should be against the 13th Amendment.

If you live in a city and own property you have to abide by the ordinances. Leave or change the law if you don't like it. As for this case,
She get enough publicity to do just fine.

Should have called 911 - declaring that she can't get out of her house.

There was 12+ inches of snow on the sidewalk. If she can't do it herself, she can pay some enterprising high school kid to do it for her.

Boston is a pedestrian-friendly city that gets snowstorms, so ordinances like this one are necessary for the public. If you don't like it, don't live here.

or from the 1/3 of the city who doesn't own a car and depends on safe sidewalks to walk to public transportation to get to work every day.

I support the fine. I know somebody who was in Boston and slipped on unshoveled snow because someone was too lazy to shovel it. It's about time we had common sense snow control

So is the city fined for not having every and all streets open also? Fining homeowners for not having their sidewalks cleared is the law but blocked roads and streets aren't finable. I see a double standard here.

Boston does a pretty good job of getting streets open after snowstorms. The only time I've ever encountered dangerous snow conditions on roads is literally while it was snowing.

Are you advocating they use tax dollars for city services to shovel her snow?

If Boston wants their citizens to have a safe place to walk, sure. Does the woman have the right to put a sign saying keep off my yard. According to you, it's her sidewalk to maintain. During snowy times I'd stick up a sign. Would you want to be sued for injury by someone because they fell and broke an arm fours hours after it quit snowing while you might be in bed sick or something?

It's a stupid law. City comes along and dozers the snow onto your property where the sidewalk is and then you're responsible for clearing the sidewalk the city abetted in making even more unsafe? Stupid law.

The plows generally don't push the snow onto the sidewalk. The easement is wide enough to accomodate the walking path and a snow bank. There are pictures in the OP's article.

The old lady in the article wasn't lazy.

Is the sidewalk her property now?
