The media’s frenzy over the Sunni mujahedin advance toward Baghdad is a stark reminder to all Americans of the dire costs exacted from them by the U.S. government’s unnecessary interventions in the affairs of other countries and peoples. Today’s stories from Iraq underline the total waste flowing from the 2003 U.S. intervention in Iraq, the costs of which exceed $1 trillion, 5,000 dead U.S. service personnel, many more thousands of soldiers and Marines wounded and maimed, and an unending and apparently un-endable war with the Muslim world.

In a nutshell, here is what the bipartisan U.S. interventionists and Neoconservatives — remember Hillary Clinton, Joe Lieberman, and most pro-Israel Democrats wanted war — managed in the space of little more than a decade.

I agree. This was the only outcome. No matter what path was taken up to this point, they all led to this.

Let me just lead with this: The world is a better place without Saddam Hussein in it. Likewise, the world was instantly a better place when he was removed from power.

However, your broader point is valid - Americans want their cake and eat it, too. Americans want cheap oil - and all of the positives that go along with it - but do not have the stomach for the unpleasantness of what is required to ensure that.

Now, having said that - the bipartisan support for the war indicates we signed on for it - then it was horribly mismanaged. Neither that management, nor our foreign policy improved on January 20, 2009 - in fact, it deteriorated.

As we continue to elect poseurs and dilettantes to positions of high responsibility, we will continue to reap what we sow.

Very true. And unfortunately, this trend is not likely to end in the near future.

I say divide the country into 3, based on the tribes territories. Sunni, Shia, and Kurds. We can make friends with one of them, maybe the Kurds, and move on. If one of them attacks the US later, we should fight back then with technology, missiles, air power, drones/bombs, etc. then. I'm conservative, but, to hell with the Muslims. They are not worth it. Canada has oil,Obama, we do to.

This is our doing and we have to fix it, IMO. The rest of the world is watching our play here with the most incompetent administration in the history of our country.

This isn't a Bush or Obama fiasco at this time. This is an American clusterfrick of epic proportions that has to end so that the terrorism doesn't spread across the world. Everyone saying frick em and let god sort them out are batshit crazy. There is no good in having this level of unrest in the Middle East, which is why Iran is starting to help. Once other nations are involved to protect their interests, this shitstorm will manifest into WW3 all because we carried our asses with no plan in place for the Civil War we predicted.

There is no fixing it short of nuking the entire region.

Terrorism is going no where. The best we can hope for is convincing them to focus their efforts on another target.

There is nothing that could or can be done. There was never an out to this situation that didn't involve a civil war.

More Hoeseshyt reasoning from dumb liberals.

For starters Saddam Husien chose to invade Kuwait, then agreed to a cease fire, but didn't allow inspections as the cease fire called for, so unlike this pussy president and uber liberals, Bush backed up his words with action, thereby denying a rouge nation nuclear weapons, WHICH IRAN IS WELL ON THEIR WAY TO GETTING. ( And we will pay the price in the future for allowing Iran to get nukes)

We stayed in Japan & Germany for years, only a fool would have pulled our troops out without a status of forces agteement.

You cowards who ranted against GWB protecting our interests after the NYC / petagon disasters have now been proven wrong, you don't sit back as Clinton did and allow these ruthless, evil terrorist to exist, you put them on the run a kill them wherever you have to go. But no, Odummy chose to be a follower instead of a leader and put his finger in the wind, AFTER THE MEDIA AND DEMS BRAINWASHED THE MASSES for seven years instead of getting behind the war in terrorist. All for political gain.

We need to kill these radicals WHEREVER THEY ARE and force the muslim countries to clamp down on the evil bastards OR ELSE.

We have a lot of pussified Chamnerling's in America now.

*sigh*

This isn't Japan or Germany. That is an idea y'all need to just drop.

Japan and Germany were both unified countries. The individuals living in those regions recognized the existence and legitimacy of their government.

These countries in the ME are not the same. They recognize their tribes, not the government.

Comparing the situation in Japan and Germany to the ME is basically comparing apples to car parts.

Get all of the Americans out of the country and step off. If they want to act like savages let them. They knew went we went in there that we wouldn't be there forever. It was in their best interests to create to pull together to create a strong entity to combat what everyone had to know was coming.

A lot of truth to your post. Forty, fifty years ago the ME might have as well have been on another planet. No close immediate danger to the homeland of the U.S.

Now, they're just a cell phone call away from a bomb in any city in the U.S. All of the sophisticated high-powered military hardware in the world cannot stop them if they decide to carry out a mission in the U.S. They are in no hurry to make a statement TT. They operate on their own time because once we are gone from there, Katy bar the door. This is their way of life.

The war between the ME and the rest of the world will never be over. The militant, terrorists there DO NOT sign peace treaties. Bush, Obama and anyone else that comes along bragging about "the war" is over is a damn fool.

Fortress America.

Technology has made the world a much smaller place.
