LaPierre screwing up?

First let's get this clear
I'm hardcore Republican, gun owner, NRA member, prior military and good old Southern boy.
That said, is Wayne screwing up our chances at defeating the nuts by arguing hard against the background checks issue?
I'm for them, to a point, in order to keep weapons purchases out if the hands of mental defectives like the ones responsible for these recent shootings.
But is he setting us up for a loss with this stance by being TOO unbending?

Thoughts....

I don't think so, they can't enforce millions of laws in place now, why add more?

Just my .02, but can't give an inch here.

how will background checks do this?

Nah. The NRA has enough money to not bend.

Some are calling for mental defects to be included in checks. I agree that crazies shouldn't have guns, but that is a wide blanket, that will keep a lot of people from owning guns that should be able to. Take my wife for example. During a very trying time in our life, she was diagnosed with depression. That was years ago, it was treated, and she is as normal a person as you and I. Under some proposed statutes, she will no longer be able to buy guns. I think there is a happy medium somewhere.

The obamaites want background checks on person to person sales. And background checks wouldn't have stopped sandy hook. He stole those guns and murdered their rightful owner, his own mother.

California gun hearing: DOJ keeps track of prohibited gun owners, but no funds to regulate

They don't enforce the current laws but want more. It is nothing more than a power grab. Here is an example in California

quote:

Then came the stunning revelation: Californians who aren't supposed to own guns do. The Department of Justice even knows about them because the Arms Prohibited System, known as APPS, has identified them. There's just no money to confiscate the weapons.

"We ought to get those guns out of the hands of people who are prohibited," said State Sen. Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento).

Steinberg asked how many people and weapons were on the list.

"As of yesterday, there was 19,784 identified in the Arms Prohibited System. That's basically our backlog. They're linked to 38,682 handguns and 1,640 assault weapons," said Stephen Lindley with the California Department of Justice.

Think about all the Dems in red states that get tossed on their arse if some of this shite would get passed in the House or Senate.

This is all posturing so they can say, "See, we tried." But in the end, they'll be thwarted by their own voters saying, "Vote for weapons restrictions and you're gone."

Take 10 minutes out of your morning to soak up this video. Ted Cruz gets the real world situation and should be strongly considered to lead the GOP charge to take back this country.

TED CRUZ

Once you see this, you will realize that LaPierre's steadfast approach is the only way to handle the dire situation we are faced with.

NO way do gun owners give an inch. Enforce current laws.

The Government ignores laws that are inconvenient (immigration/drugs) due to voting demographics...and is going after a demographic (Conservative Gun Owners) that they aren't going to win or influence in the voting booth anyway.

Pretty Simple when you think it out....

When Rubio and Paul are running this country, he needs to have a job in the Cabinet.

You sure about that? I think they hugely influence the voting booth.

re: LaPierre screwing up?
The whole "expanded" background check issue is so complicated that it is very difficult to decide on whether or not to get behind it.

Most people including gun owners want to keep guns out of the hand of those who "shouldn't" have them but what constitutes that definition.

Mentally unstable, mentally defective or mentally handicap all have very wide definitions. Also part of the discussion has been to included those convicted of a violent crime. One the surface that makes sense but even recently there was a story of a Navy vet who failed the NICS background for a misdemeanor charge for fighting back in the 60s.

I myself am not opposed to the idea of including certain information in background checks but before I would support ANY movement on that I would have to see clear definitions of what constitutes the makeup of these checks.

Like someone posted before, does someone having suffered from depression at one point in their life disqualify them? What if they had just had a death in the family? Is someone taking Ritalin or Adderall mean they are mentally defective.

If a person is Baker acted, do they now surrender all 2nd Amendment rights? Do you know how abused the Baker Act system is?

Just like with the No-fly list, there is currently no recourse for someone to get off that list once put on even if completely by mistake. Some sort of judicial review would have to be part of the oversight imo otherwise it doesn't pass the smell test. It would be an easy tool for abuse unless safeguards are in place.

These are complicated questions that until answered will continue to get a no from me.

re: LaPierre screwing up?

You sure about that?

Absolutely sure. The loudest voices on gun control are coming from Blue Districts. Also, the likelihood of voter backlash on gun control will not be generational.

Immigration legislation will be the next "Civil Rights Act" for the Democrats. This is straight up LBJ over again. Democrats are willing to lose the gun vote if they can get the HIspanic vote locked down.

Anyway, the media controls the message and we will not see an unbiased representation on the news again in our lifetime sans major revolution in journalism and journalistic honesty. Everything is agenda driven now.
