There were signs all over Boulder about their new tax. Sugar is the new sin tax I guess?

I read that a similar tax in NYC did not come close to generating the revenue they thought it would, and caused a lot of small businesses on the margins of the city to lose business to shops just outside the tax.

But whatevs.

Ridiculous

Boulder is a fun town if you can avoid some of the psycho progressives. The flat irons are fun, for me at least

Whenever a food is taxed, the government tells us how bad that food is for us.
Same with cigarettes, don't hear a thing until they want to raise the tax and suddenly smoking is bad.

I'm all about incentivizing healthy choices and nudging people in making better decisions for themselves (a la Sunstein and Thaler), but I'm not sure taxation is the way to do it.

The best way is to actually make people fiscally responsible for their poor decisions, instead of being subsidized by taxpayers or by fellow insurance customers. Insurance companies should have a lot more leeway in pricing for individual habits and factors.

But there is no sugar in those soft drinks. It's all high fructose corn syrup.

This is the obvious next step once single payer is implemented. Then the government has an arguement to control the food you eat and activities you partake in.

Anyone who doesn't see this is either in favor of it or beyond ignorant.

I lived there when they outlawed smoking in private businesses, before outlawing outdoor smoking in public places , before they legalized public marijuana smoking just about everywhere. About the same time a cyclist punched a smoking driver in the face through his open window to demonstrate the danger of second hand smoke. It's Boulder . Thirty square miles surrounded by reality. That's what you get in Boulder. Nannies. Nannies everywhere.

Did you feel the earth quakes the other day? Maybe you ought to sell and buy in the NC mountains for safety? You are right in the death zone of the super volcano, aye? I have never been to this part of the country, is it nice?

New Madrid will suck as well. I may move...

Oh and how far are you from Displaced Cuckeye's ranch? Have you visited to kill the coyotes?

Ideally, sure. But insurance companies don't seem worthy of this leeway, in my opinion.

I put in a bid for some acreage along the Elk River where it's really hilly. Good cattle country, and some good spots for terraced produce gardens. If the Elk becomes brackish I'm going to be pissed.
