In fact, he did it as recently as june of last year.
I will be drinking a cold beer for the first time in years when that brain cancer of his finally gets him out of the senate.

you really should read beyond the headline.
He isn't slamming Trans in the military, he is slamming the Obama admin's decision to move forward without consulting the Armed Svcs committee and politicizing an issue at the expense of the military. in addition to a myriad of other complaints about transparency and secrecy.

Then McCain should be praising Trump for rolling back Obama's grave mistake of making such a radical move with the military without consulting Congress and the appropriate committees
But McCain is still slamming Trump for doing that and returning the military back to where it was before Obama fricked up on that.

if anything his complaints about Trump today are consistent with his complaints from the Obama admins handling of the same issue.
Furthermore, it seems he was right in his criticism of Obama's handling, as a failure to enact legislation then has resulted in the tug of war back towards a ban now.

McCain complained about Obama opening transgenders up to military without consulting Congress.
Trump is just simply rolling back that mistake and McCain is shitting on him for it.

Sounds like Trump is becoming a regular politician like McCain, Kerry, HRC, being against something before he was for it
1. Against sending more troops to Afghanistan
2. For abortion before he was against it
3. China currency
4. Was against US Import-Export bank, but now is in favor of it
5. Mexico paying for the wall
To many to list and that is just a few. He has become part of the swamp which is one of the biggest things he ran against.

He insisted on waiting for a report, then asked for a new report when he got it and it didn't say what he wanted it to.
He insisted on waiting for input from "the generals" then dismissed their opinions as just "individual opinions".
Of course people on this board who were outraged in 1993 when Clinton tried to lift the gay ban will never admit how wrong they were on that issue.

I think I can now guess with some degree of accuracy exactly how John McCain survived his POW time in North Vietnam. He has a remarkable aptitude for turning coat and pleasing his enemies.
