Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP):

“President Trump’s decision to formally withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is a serious mistake that will have lasting consequences for America’s economy and our strategic position in the Asia-Pacific region.

“This decision will forfeit the opportunity to promote American exports, reduce trade barriers, open new markets, and protect American invention and innovation. It will create an opening for China to rewrite the economic rules of the road at the expense of American workers. And it will send a troubling signal of American disengagement in the Asia-Pacific region at a time we can least afford it.

“Abandoning TPP is the wrong decision. Moving forward, it is imperative that America advances a positive trade agenda in the Asia-Pacific that will keep American workers and companies competitive in one of the most economically vibrant and fastest-growing regions in the world.”

American exports to where, exactly?

Are we exporting dishwashers to Vietnam? T-shirts to Malaysia?

TPP was garbage. Only like 1/8th of it actually had anything to do with trade.

This is one of the issues on here I think we all pretty much agree on.

Sweet Jesus... McCain and others aren't even attempting to shy away from their agenda. My goodness I would give anything to see Trump put this fricker in his place.

Which country does TPP mandate we go to war with? That's the only reason I can see McCain supporting it.

Even if we get back to the exact same agreement, I have no issue if Trump wants to tear every agreement up and start negotiations over.

Not if you continue to engage with each nation individually.

You sure as hell don't need TPP to do this.

SOTU Address should be entertaining. I have a feeling Trump will call these people out. If you all thought his inauguration speech was executed beautifully just wait.

T-shirts, no. Dishwashers and other products that take skill to make, yes.

Also, Japan is Louisiana's 4th largest trading partner, which was in TPP. Louisiana's job base is heavily dependent on exports, because we benefit from the Mississippi River and our port system and bring in factories that like to export products. So hopefully we can forge a bi-lateral trade agreement with Japan, but Trump withdrawing from TPP means Louisiana just lost jobs. No way around that.

That's the idea. Exporting jobs overseas is not how we build our economy.

Ran across something last night and I wondered, How did John McCain survive the Lincoln Savings and Loan/Charles Keating scandal?
