ABC news link (was also in Business Report)

quote:

When the state education board adopted the standards in 2010, Jindal supported them, saying they would help students to better prepare for college and careers. He reversed course earlier this year, however, and now says he opposes the standards because they are an effort by the Obama administration to meddle in state education policy.

The governor's change of heart is not shared by lawmakers, the state education board and his hand-picked education superintendent, all of whom refuse to jettison Common Core from Louisiana's classrooms. Jindal tried to derail use of the standards by suspending testing contracts, but a state judge lifted that suspension, calling the governor's actions harmful to parents, teachers and students.

Turning to federal court represents a new tactic in Jindal's efforts to undermine Louisiana's use of the standards.

"Louisiana now finds itself trapped in a federal scheme to nationalize curriculum," the lawsuit says. "What started as good state intentions has materialized into the federalization of education policy through federal economic incentives and duress."

Louisiana received more than $17 million from Race to the Top and joined the PARCC consortium. It also received a waiver from certain federal education requirements under a program enacted by the Obama administration in 2011 that Jindal's lawsuit says was designed to coerce states to use Common Core or risk the loss of billions in federal education funding.

Dumb, but at least it doesn't screw with Louisiana schools.

Maybe he drop his opposition to the state-level lawsuit?

He's trying SO hard to grab attention for 2016. It's laughable.

Sorry Bobby...you should not have signed onto this shite in the first place. It was inevitable to lead to federal interference (Hell...that was the impetus for the damned thing).

This is nothing but posturing for your ill-fated and bone-headed 2016 run.

Agreed. So what should we do now that we're already into this thing?

I think this is just the camel's nose under the tent towards politicizing our schools. The real effect won't be felt for many more years. I think that 10-15 years from now, we'll see how much of an effect special interest groups will have on what is taught in our schools. By that time, the discussion won't be on whether we should have the federal government determining the curriculum, but rather WHO will do the determining...

He's actually very intelligent, unlike you. He's just a green horn when it comes to politics within Louisiana. He needs some adult supervision.

This is one of the dumbest moves he could have made. How can you argue duress when you were part of the proposed initiative to start the damn thing and when the Feds jumped on board, YOU TOOK THEIR MONEY.

I don't like Jindal, but this statement reveals you are the dumbest poliboard poster ever in the history of poliboard posters.

Besides, he's on the same side of your union friends who want no accountability or measurement of education progress in government schools. Shouldn't you be happy?

I don't have any friends in the teacher's union.

Yeah, but he and his PR people have to do something to change the narrative before he gets bashed over the head in the 2016 GOP debates.

See the Stelly Tax Repeal developments in 2008 for a perfect example, or the legislative pay raise circus.

Seems like Jindal was railroading people who opposed common core.

Now he is grand standing against common core. I guess all those Facebook users made some noise with their "outrage."
