Streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify as well as digital purchases of books, videos and apps on mobile devices would be newly taxed starting Nov. 1 under a plan Gov. John Bel Edwards is pushing. The governor is backing House Bill 562 filed
by Rep. Katrina Jackson, D-Monroe, that would expand state and local sales taxes to new products and areas, including digital services and purchases as well as cable television and satellite radio subscriptions. Other types of services -- everything from massages and landscaping to certain types of debt collection and insurance appraisals -- would also be newly subjected to state and local sales taxes, under this legislation. The broader sales tax is supposed to be a trade-off in part for lowering of the current state sales tax rate from 5 percent to 4 percent in July 2018. So although the sales tax would decrease, it would apply to more areas under the governor's tax strategy.

Besides engineering lawsuits and figuring out ways for the State to pay for his world travel I think JBE enjoys inventing new taxes to raise more than anything else.

I will live in a poor state with crappy infrastructure if it has low taxes.
I will live in a rich state with great infrastructure if it has high taxes.
I will not live in a poor state with crappy infrastructure and high taxes.
The tax burden on Louisiana citizens is higher than that of Texas citizens. Think about that....

seems like a pretty standard "expand the base" approach to me

Yes, but why not do that with corporate taxes and the like? Why not cut out all these exemptions, special tax credits and increase the tax base that way too?
Why should some pay and not others? Let's do it right, expand the tax base to include the guy hiding behind the tree.

how do you even justify this besides a money grab?
Posted on 4/6/17 at 2:00 pm to uptownsage
Why on earth would you back a proposal by Katrina Jackson?

Looks like some are trying to. Business & industry lobby is powerful

Seems like this is a clear step in that direction. Purchases of final services should be taxed just like final goods right? Obviously I agree with doing the same thing and broadening the base on the corporate income side of things as well (which is what I assume you're referring to)

This is just more evidence that if Louisiana is going to improve and prosper, power needs to be decentralized away from Baton Rouge where local communities can keep their taxes and power.
When we inevitably rewrite the state constitution, we need to follow the Texas model of state government.
Oh and get rid of the Governor's line item veto power as that is the bane of his power.

Taxes for what? We never use money properly and adding more to a shitty system is retarded. This is becoming unsustainable. Someone with fiscal sense needs to take over. shite, I will run at 25 if I have to.

Don't blame Vitter.
Blame the moral bible thumping conservatives that ignored the health of their wallet and JBE's liberal as hell tax and spend voting record in favor of getting their pound of flesh over their moral outrage over Vitter's personal life despite the fact we don't elect politicians to be our preacher.
They got what they voted for and elections have consequences.
