It's not a "False Equivalence"; it's a "False Choice/Dilemma"

False Equivalence

quote:

False equivalence is a logical fallacy in which two opposing arguments appear to be logically equivalent when in fact they are not.

False Dilemma

quote:

A false dilemma is a type of informal fallacy in which something is falsely claimed to be an "either/or" situation, when in fact there is at least one additional option.

a popular meme among liberals and progressives is to declare "FALSE EQUIVALENCE" when discussing the violence of the auth-Left. their argument rests on the theory that we cannot equalize fascists and communists and since "Nazi" has a special place in our history, we have to ignore everything else and nothing compares

however, they are engaging in a logical fallacy of their own: the false choice

their argument is a false choice because it assumes there is only a binary option: hate Nazis or support Nazis, so if you try to attack auth-Left groups, then the implication is that you're pro-Nazi (b/c there are only 2 choices, and if you don't explicitly hate Nazis, then you support them)

so if you're confronted with this fallacy, point it out. there is no false equivalence between authoritarianism on the right or left, IF you are anti-authoritarian. their attempts to force you into a binary choice of either being pro-Nazi or anti-NAzi is a logical fallacy and you should point that out, too.

there is nothing ideologically inconsistent (or morally wrong) with being anti-authoritarianism

being anti-authoritarian means you can hate authoritarians on the left and right

being against authoritarians on the left does not imply that you support authoritarians on the right

also beware the demand of declaration of hatred of Nazis, wherein if you make a comment that doesn't include an outward hatred/rejection of Nazis, the implication is that you support Nazis. if you want to be really annoying, and i have thought about doing this, create a disclaimer to add to EVERY comment along the lines of:

Note: the above comment in no way excludes hatred of Nazis. Nazis are terrible, evil, and immoral and have no place in society. any failure to directly state this in no way implies support of their moral bankruptcy

When two entities are evil there's no need to rank them.

Pointless argument. They don't care what it's called or what it means. They just want to shout it down for "X" reason.

You're trying to reason with a side that calls everyone literally hitler.

Can we not pretend that these "Nazis" are anything like the German Nazis?

Well put. The same could apply for progressives as well. Just because you are in favor of a society without racial descrimination, think that glbt people should be treated the same as everyone else, and think that Muslims are not all terrorists, that doesn't make you a cuck snowflake. You can think those things without going off the deep end like the libs have been portrayed.

Exactly.

"They're nazis! They literally marched Jews into death camps and tried to take over Europe! And they're trying to do it again!"

Or give them this much attention.

You can't tell me that this is the most important thing going on in the world right now.

all that argument does is amplify the message of the loons and gives them perceived power that they don't actually possess

good luck on that fight b/c progs will never pass up a good cause to rally around and virtue signal

They are spending a lot of time and energy on this.

They must believe they are in danger.

Evil is evil, plain and simple. It matters not whether you are a pro-Nazi, or Antifa. When you plan to, or commit acts of violence against another, your alleged moral authority is irrelevant and invalid.

The ends do not justify the means if you are advocating violence.

You know what Trump's comments definitely were?

Bad timing

You don't use a tragedy to call out the other side's transgressions. It doesn't matter how "right" you are. It's always going to appear as though you are sympathetic to the side that killed someone.

Next time do it without the disclaimer. It's not necessary. It's counterproductive. Just speak truthfully and unapologetically.

The left lives and breathes off of logical fallacies. And sadly they are effective when pushed through the media.
