Another thing to consider is how, metaphorically, the photo for "Islam" arguably would have looked more like the West some decades ago. Islam has for several decades now endured a rise of fundamentalism.

Do you even Ataturk, brah?
Islam hasn't necessarily been some fundamentalist Wahhabi/Shariah monolith for 1400 years, it's evolved and seen various permutations throughout its history and geographic reach.
That said, it's generally been a hindrance on the region's progress, to be sure.
