Is White Supremacy that big a deal?

I mean, there are probably a few thousand nationally.
The media is making it a huge boogeyman. It is a tiny tiny fringe group. Infinitesimal, even.
I have been mostly white my entire life, and I have known 2 in my many years. . .and I live in the Deep South. I have met many racists of all colors, but only 2 genuine white supremacists.
Am I wrong here? Are there Klan/Skinhead sleeper cells out there waiting to be activated, that have gone unnoticed?
or is one murder an extreme outlier, and not a cause for national alarm?

Why are we talking about white supremacy again? Ignore the attention seekers. Same with Antifa and BLM.

I think the goal here is to paint anyone with any alt-right leanings as a Klan type neo-Nazi

I'm thinking that White Supremists groups are as real of a threat to the U.S. as Ebola was.

Alt-Right seems more like a keyboard command. The media has been trying to link it to racism since I first heard the term.
