I have Facebook friends who are notorious for reposting stories that with a cursory examination would prove to be false. Then these stories are passed along as true and shared, and before long, a totally false story is believed to be true.
Then you have stories that are harder to confirm and are either partly true, are spun so hard by both sides that you don't know what to believe.
Additionally, you have stories that were believed to be true for centuries and because of science or discoveries, these once held truths are proven to be false.
Now, I'm not advocating for censorship and promoting a limiting of internet sites, but how do you glean what is truth from lies?
Is there a process that you use to check out a story? And do you always use the same sources?

This is what the original "fake news" that Liberals were talking about to justify Hillary's loss.

It totally backfired.

If you elect me as your governor I promise to always tell you my truths, as well as ease the burden of self research and critical thinking. Gofundme @ BPM4gov

Yes, do you want to hear about my diarrhea on Friday night after eating a tenderloin that was too rare?

Warm little chunks, millions it felt like the size of tic tacs in a sea of the foulest smelling poo water

Most of my relatives live far away and I have a photography page as well, so it works for me.

Facebook: ripping apart marriages, breaking lifelong friendships and causing political divide since 2004.

That should be their new slogan.

The day Facebook became something that every person, irregardless of age, had is the day that the political divide in this country became permanently split IMO. Even politics aside, how many stories get shared about "purges", "kidnappings in WalMart parking lot", "dog murdering bugs", etc get shared daily, when a 30 second google search shows them to be false. Coupled with a decline in our education system, it's no wonder our populace is becoming so dumbed down.

That's not only too much information, why do we need to hear about it?

People have little discrimination. Some woman unfriended me after i pointed out that snowden was not in argentina and that all the other nonsense she posted from that site was fiction. There were obvious clues.

Then, I would simply suggest using it to share photos ... and flat-out ignoring everything else.

Again, problem-solved.

That's pretty much what I do, but my question was broader than just Facebook. Facebook is simply one source that can be used for misinformation.

It bothers me too, but it's immediately met with "delete Facebook and solve your problem." The fact is, even if I don't see it liberal and conservative misinformation is being spread to people who can't distinguish truth from propaganda and have a vote that counts equally to mine. There are way more people sharing "fake news" and false memes on Facebook than they have people who are informed, and that is scary for the country.

A perfect example is the murder rate meme that Trump tweeted 2+ years ago that was shared by thousands of people, but was easily proven false, misleading at best. A large part of the populace takes anything a famous person posts as absolute fact, no matter how wrong it may actually be.
