Government troops and allied militia retook the eastern side of the city, the last major IS stronghold in Iraq, earlier this year. But the western side, with its narrow streets, may prove a bigger challenge. The UN has warned that the safety of hundreds of thousands of civilians trapped in the city is a key priority. Leaflets warning residents of an imminent offensive were earlier dropped over the west of the city.

Bullets will fly. Blood will be spilled. Oaths of revenge will be sworn.

Even if the government wins, Mosul will still be a backwards tribal hell hole ruled by a vicious religion in the middle of the desert. Not even worth fighting over, IMO.

Nothing like short sighted politicians who's decisions result in paying for the same piece of real estate in blood twice over. First with American blood and then with Iraqi blood.

Blue helmets and leaflets. The mark of a surprise operation!

Is this the longest seige of a single Iraqi city ever? We've been talking about Mosul for what seems a year now.

It is not in the desert.

And strategic.

"The city's fortunes revived with the discovery of oil in the area, from the late 1920s onward. It became a nexus for the movement of oil via truck and pipeline to both Turkey and Syria. Qyuarrah Refinery was built within about an hour's drive from the city and was used to process tar for road-building projects. It was damaged but not destroyed during the Iran–Iraq War." wiki

I hope the Iraqis succeed, because ISIS is scum of the earth.

If successful, the next question is what will happen to the people of Mosul.

Before ISIS took over, the Iraqi army of Shiites were supposedly mistreating the Sunni population of Mosul pretty badly. The new military leadership now seems more interested in a unified Iraq, so is welcoming to the Sunni folks who escape Mosul or help them fight ISIS.

It'll be interesting to see how long that unified spirit lasts when ISIS is no longer in the picture.

I think the plan is to have "loyal" Sunni tribes there instead of Shia army. That's one of the reasons the Sunni tribes aren't doing as much direct fighting right now. I don't remember the numbers, but I think it's around 2500, they have so far to protect Mosul once Iraqi army captures it. They don't want all of them being killed trying to take it so they are mostly on the sideline for now, the Sunni tribes. Although they did do some fighting in eastern Mosul, but not as much as the Counter Terrorism unit (Iraq's elite army) and the regular Iraqi army has been doing. The CT units have been doing the most work as they are the best trained, problem is, there ain't much of them left.

Did we buy the Iraqis some A-29 Super Tucanos?

Hopefully they'll win.

I gotta feeling that USF will be involved in more than just oversight, though.

Hopefully the IA will finally win this thing.

It has been 3-4 months but they have been taking a careful approach which is good. It's like Falluja which took a couple of months but there are likely 3-4 times as many insurgents.

Don't announce it. Just apply an ongoing concentrated effort and get it done.

This is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. As if the Iraqi army could possibly surprise them anyway. No one is surprised in battle any more. This is the 21st century. The Iraqi army can't drive into Mosul at any given time and expect there to be no resistance because ISIS was "surprised". It's one of the dumbest things Trump and his fanboys spew.

Urban warfare is not fast. It's street by street, room by room, doorway to doorway fighting. Dropping leaflets warns the citizens and keeps them off the streets. The goal is to reduce collateral damage as much as possible. If you don't try to avoid civilian casualties in your own Iraqi city, why even try to liberate it? Just call in B-52s to level the place if you really want to surprise ISIS.

let these guys live in their bubble and believe whatever preconceived notions they have about the world outside of their tiny bubble.
