I'm feeling better about Trump's speech after reading Tillerson's response from State.

Good cop (Tillerson) bad cop (Trump).

quote:

This evening, President Trump announced the new integrated strategy for the U.S. approach to South Asia that will require diplomatically engaging Pakistan, Afghanistan and India to create the conditions for stability in the region.

This new strategy signals clear support for the Afghan people and government. We will continue to support the Afghan government and security forces in their fight against terrorists and prevent the reestablishment of safe havens in the country.

Our new strategy breaks from previous approaches that set artificial calendar-based deadlines. We are making clear to the Taliban that they will not win on the battlefield. The Taliban has a path to peace and political legitimacy through a negotiated political settlement to end the war.

We stand ready to support peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban without preconditions. We look to the international community, particularly Afghanistan’s neighbors, to join us in supporting an Afghan peace process.

Pakistan has suffered greatly from terrorism and can be an important partner in our shared goals of peace and stability in the region. We look to Pakistan to take decisive action against militant groups based in Pakistan that are a threat to the region. It is vital to U.S. interests that Afghanistan and Pakistan prevent terrorist sanctuaries.

India will be an important partner in the effort to ensure peace and stability in the region, and we welcome its role in supporting Afghanistan’s political and economic modernization.

Wow, that actually is a very good response.

I can't help but mentally replace "Afghanistan" with "Vietnam" and "Taliban" with "Vietcong" every time I read something like that.

Seriously, give it a try. You'll get serious deja vu if you're old enough to remember the last time we heard all this.

It means "We know how this ends, give us a figleaf to pretend it's something other than what it will be"

Okay. Fair enough. I see what you're saying and you uderstand better than I because you apparently lived during those political realities at the time. I was too young. Just a baby.

(It ends with the Taliban running Afghanistan. They might offer up a few sacrificial lambs, maybe even change names, but it'll be the same guys.)

In a quagmire with no path to victory, who do you think comes out on top?

the people who live there, or the people on the opposite side of the world?

That's actually a good thing and the only real solution to an all around shitty situation.

I don't disagree. I also don't see the point in delaying the inevitable, which is what this is. Especially if it ends up status quo through the end of this term and just kicks the can down again.

Means Taliban can come to the table and negotiate a peaceful path that the US would prefer .

It means that we invaded to remove the Taliban from power only 16 years ago to give them more power.

Its doomed for failure. Victory for the opposition means that enough of them survive to continue to wage terrorism. You cannot kill an ideology (for which we can thank the Saudis) for its spread. Most likely the most assured result will be a drastic increase in civilian deaths ala the Russians in Syria. Ultimately we will continue to be the losers. And don't forget that ISIS is still in Afghanistan and they pay twice as much as the Afghan army.

If you stop and think about it, who gives a damn who is running Afghanistan? So long as they don't let terrorists set up camps there, as far as I am concerned they can Taliban their asses off.

Cut them a deal..We stop bombing the hell out of them, they run things as they see fit and stay out of our business.

He's offering them an "out". If they don't take the generous offer they will all die.

I don't sense any support of the USA by the people of Afghanistan. Do you?

Have you heard of even a single one asking us to increase our involvement?
